Hot Damn

Is anyone else watching the Orange Bowl right now? It’s one hell of a game…

UPDATE: Now we’re in triple overtime. I don’t think this game will ever end.

UPDATE II: I think it’s safe to say that neither of the kickers in tonight’s game are headed to the NFL anytime soon…

UPDATE III: Finally it’s over. Thank God Kelly made that kick. Not because I’m a Penn State fan. Just because I felt sorry for him.

Am I surprised? Sadly, nuh-uh.

Is it that time of the year again?

Regular readers will remember that between August 2004 and April 2005 we moved the editorial offices of Sadly, No! several times in order to avoid detection by “the authorities.” This was in addition to our move to a new ISP in February of last year.

Which means it’s been a long time since we moved anything, and we’re feeling restless. So, to celebrate the new year, we’re going to switch ISPs again! Besides the excitement involved in doing so, the continued popularity of Sadly, BLT No! has forced us to seek a new home with more bandwidth. Sadly, a search for an ISP that would provide more funny did not prove fruitful. Fortunately, we have Gavin and Brad for that.

So, in the coming days S,N! may disappear or, our favorite, you may end up at the old site while DNS propagation is ongoing, which means it won’t look like it’s down except that you’ll be accessing a fake S,N! and then any comments you leave will disappear. Or something.

Any questions? Comments? Complaints? Go right ahead.

NOW That’s What I Call Wanking! (Volume 1)

The Big Trunk clogs up the memory hole with a steaming pile of elephant dung:

And so today, in the furor created by the New York Times stories by James Risen and Eric Lichtblau, the Times and its media allies seek to impose the yoke of their thought on readers in order to stifle if not control the debate — “to make all other modes of thought impossible.” Let’s call the lingo “Timesspeak” in honor of Orwell. Here are two critical examples of Timesspeak in action:

1. References to the NSA eavesdropping program as “domestic spying.” See, for example, the Times story on the investigation of the leaks underlying the story: “Justice Dept. Inquiry into leak of domestic spying.” Contrary to the language used by the Times, the program is one of foreign intelligence surveillance; it is not a domestic spying program. Like the authorities in Oceania, the Times seeks to dictate the politically correct attitude to the subject.

Let’s go back to the original Times story (my emphasis):

Months after the Sept. 11 attacks, President Bush secretly authorized the National Security Agency to eavesdrop on Americans and others inside the United States to search for evidence of terrorist activity without the court-approved warrants ordinarily required for domestic spying, according to government officials.

I’m continually amazed by the willingness of Powerline to pee directly in reality’s face. They are truly the R. Kellies of punditry.

[Gavin adds: See, that’s just what he was saying! The Times reported that it was domestic spying, therefore since the Times is always wrong, it was…not domestic spying — but then, if you look back at the Times, they say that it IS domestic spying. So that proves it.]

Dep’t of crosssing ‘i’s and dotting ‘t’s

Or whatever, something like that.

Once again, as the days roll by, we’re reminded that no one has yet conceived a joke using the term, ‘Jack Abramoff,’ such as in the following construction:

“You can ________, but you can’t Jack Abramoff.”

This is in our opinion a serious omission in the left-blogosphere’s coverage of the case, and we hope it can be remedied with due alacrity.

We Can’t Imagine Why

Just Do Life
[…]
blogging isn?t a priority right now. I barely have time to be online lately, nevermind blog. It?s not a bad thing either. Being away from the computer can be refreshing and can bring one closer to their friends and family. They are who count- the people who make your life interesting and worthwhile.

Like me and Brad and Seb and tehl4m3 and Auguste and Pinko and D. Sidhe and… What about us? We make life interesting and worthwhile!

I?ll blog when I have time. I?m moving to new place, working different hours. I have some plans for some travel in the next couple months. And of course the fun things- concerts, parties, trips to the beach (yes, in the middle of the winter); snowmobiling, four wheelin, roller blading (yes, in the middle of the winter)?my usual array of ?My to-do list? stuff.

I?m looking forward to this year. Doing life?as it happens and not according to some resolution.

Kim is moving to Alaska in the next three weeks. She will not be blogging anymore (she?s crazy?she is getting rid of her computers altogether). LOL

Sob! [sniff] We can’t have nice things! Something always comes along and… Oh, God-dammit! [sob!]

Is it the curs?d blog-destroying ah-oogah horn again? Take it away — take the horn away! [sob] It’s been nothing but ruin since we found that thing in an old trunk, down behind the haunted laundromat near Old Man McSteinberg’s haunted pumpkin farm.

We Broke It, They Bought It

With apologies to the Editors, it seems that Michael Moore is looking particularly rotund today:

The Bush administration does not intend to seek any new funds for Iraq reconstruction in the budget request going before Congress in February, officials say.

That must mean the country’s been rebuilt! Mission accomplished!

The decision signals the winding down of an $18.4 billion U.S. rebuilding effort in which roughly half of the money was eaten away by the insurgency, a buildup of Iraq’s criminal justice system and the investigation and trial of Saddam Hussein.

Oh.

Just under 20 percent of the reconstruction package remains unallocated. When the last of the $18.4 billion is spent, U.S. officials in Baghdad have made clear, other foreign donors and the fledgling Iraqi government will have to take up what authorities say is tens of billions of dollars of work yet to be done merely to bring reliable electricity, water and other services to Iraq’s 26 million people.

Hey, I’m sure they can pay for it themselves with all the oil revenue they’ll generate!

The 2005 Random Top 8

Sure, we had planned on doing some special theme year-in-review sort of thing, but that was before we realized we’d have to do a lot more research than we’re willing to in order to get this post ready to start the new year. So instead you end up with leftovers and already munched on stuff we’ve been accumulating in 2005. Think of it as 8 things that weren’t good enough to make it into a post of their own so we crammed them together into this one instead. Yum!

  • 8. Most Annoying CNN Personality
  • It’s not easy being CNN’s most annoying personality. Bob Novak left some pretty big horns to fill, and he’ll have to work hard at Fox News to unseat the current champion there (Steve Doocy.) That leaves a pretty competitive field out there — especially since winning would mean edging out Becky Anderson. Able to throw her hands up in the air and wave them around like she’s about to start flying, Becky’s worked hard to earn the crown. Sadly, No! The honor goes to another overexcited Brit, Richard Quest, a man whose personality is as exuberant as it is annoying. With a level of enthusiasm not seen on television since Mike Levey passed away, Quest has simply replaced seizure-causing sweaters with ties designed for giants as the signature clothing accessory. If you want to be made to feel like figuring out whether size matters for hotel rooms is just as worthy of exuberance as a new cure for cancer, then Quest’s Business Traveller is the program for you.
