Power Wank

Looks like the Power Tools have set their keyboards to stun:

We noted here the mysteriously under-covered story of the three would-be terrorists who were arrested in Italy after vowing to launch an attack on America that would dwarf September 11. […]

Italian authorities recently announced that they had used wiretaps to uncover the conspiracy to conduct a series of major attacks inside the U.S. Italian Interior Minister Giuseppe Pisanu said the planned attacks would have targeted stadiums, ships and railway stations, and the terrorists’ goal, he said, was to exceed the devastation caused by 9/11.

Curiously, what was deemed worthy of a worldwide media blitz abroad was virtually ignored by the U.S. media, and conservative media watchdog groups are saying that is no accident. link

The magic word, of course, is wiretap. Because as part of the never ending war on straw, conservatives are now arguing that liberals are against all wiretaps everywhere every time. That shit makes a lot of sense. As to the Algerians who were arrested:

The men’s arrest in Brescia and Naples came as they were allegedly about to flee Italy and followed a complex three-year surveillance operation of a GSPC cell by the Italian intelligence service SISMI. The three were flush with cash, and moved around constantly between the northern cities of Brescia and Vicenza, the Italian capital, Rome, and the southern city of Naples, police allege. They were also in contact with other terror cells in the northern cities of Venice, Cesena and Milan, as well as the central Italian city of Florence, according to the investigators.

We’re sure 3-year surveillance operations are routinely done without warrants in Italy. Oh, and that media blitz? Google Germany. Google France. Google UK.

Sadly, No!

[Muthafuckin’ G. Supah-Muthafucka-Ninja-Warrior adds:

Brescia and Naples, 18 Nov. (AKI) – The three Algerians detained on Tuesday in the Italian cities of Brescia and Naples were planning a massive terror attack – “on a ship as big as the Titanic, packed with explosives” – that aimed to kill “at least 10,000 people”, as well as an attack on “Italian citizens and interests” in Tunisia, according phone conversations between the three men, which Italian anti-terror police say they intercepted after al-Qaeda’s deadly 7 July attacks on London and on the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm El-Sheikh.

Um, what ship is that? Do any of those exist? No. So isn’t he being all like, “Bla-bla, I’m going to blow up the Death Star — somehow, by packing it with explosives?”

I personally want to blow up an Imperial Star Destroyer by ‘packing it with explosives,’ and I’m so waiting until they start building those.]

Woo! Now We’re Super-mad!

Sadly No! Destroyed by Dean’s World
by Dean

The evil forces of Sadly No! have been utterly destroyed by Optimus Prime of Dean’s World. Their servers brought low by our mighty power sword, they shall never recover from having challenged our mighty power.

Sure, we thought everything was cool after we signed our Mutual Non-Aggression Pact. But then I was sitting in the afterglow, finally relaxing, drinking my latte at the local Starbuck’s, when suddenly out of the corner of my eye, I spotted a flicker of motion: the dastardly Gavin M., making his way toward my seat, hoping to escape my notice of his betrayal!

I whipped out my katana and screamed “Die Gavin die!” as the other coffee-drinkers around me scattered. Then suddenly he was before me, drenched with sweat and panting with his sword in his hand. “Oh, you think you’re funny do you Esmay? Think so do you? But your time has come–the forces of Sadly No! will finally defeat you! Fill your hand with cold steal, you jingoistic sonovabitch!”

I leapt forward with my sword, howling for blood….

Special power: Underwear-yoink. Yoinks underwear over Dean’s head, hitches him to telephone pole.

“Aaah! Let me down! I’ll kill you and the leakers too! I’ll keel-keel-keel…”

Hey Seb, are we fully up yet? Can we post that pic we have of Dean at the titty bar?

Mr. Some-imagine, meet Mr. Few-had

Everyone else has yoinked onto this already, but here’s Jonah at Townhall.com singin’ that Duran Duran late-career fave, ‘Too Much Information’:

While my undergraduate experience was not exactly the late-night Cinemax adventure some imagine when they hear that there was a roughly 30-to-1 female-to-male student ratio, I did find the experience rewarding on several fronts.

A ratio of 30-1?

Worst. Sexual History. 3V@R!!1!!!!111!!eleventyone11!!!

My alma mater had a ratio of about 1.2:1, and you grabbed on and rode that .2, man. Over 4 years, that yielded large dividends.

Are pictures working yet? Can we post that pic of Jonah with Kennedy at that MTV thing — the one where he’s holding the microphone like it’s a boinky wiener in his lap?

Nah, too depressing. 30-1. Jeez.

Pin the Tail on the Stupid, Part Eleventy-Infinity

Where’s the Stupid? First they blindfold you, then they spin you around and around, and then you have to pin the tail on it! It’s hard.

From Scott Johnson, the Curly Howard character at Powerline:

Two more law clerks for Alito

We just met wth two more of Judge Alito’s former law clerks, Jim Goniea and Susan Sullivan (1990-91). They met during their clerkship, married each other and now have two children. They live and work in San Francisco and describe themselves as Democrats of the social progressive persuasion.

They have come out to support Judge Alito as a man of sterling character and an exemplary judge. They say they are confident that he will not advance a political agenda. They say the imputation of racism to Judge Alito and the implication that he supports discrimination is personally offensive to them. They consider it an embarrassment to senators they would otherwise support. Jim describes the venture as a terrible attempt to discredit a man of unassailable integrity in front of milions of people.

Oho, wait, is this the Stupid?

From the Las Vegas Review-Journal, January 4th edition:

Two of Alito’s former law clerks traveled from out of state to speak at the Las Vegas rally, which was hosted by the conservative group Progress for America. Similar rallies are taking place in 18 other states this week.

Jim Goniea, a partner with the Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal law firm in San Francisco, clerked for Alito from 1990 to 1991. Goniea described himself as a Democrat and social progressive.

“Judge Alito is someone to be respected and not feared,” Goniea said. “I think he’s going to be a great Supreme Court justice.”

And who’s Progress for America? Oh, it’s those guys. Also see here:

Progress for America (PFA) is precisely the type of organization at issue.

It has raised millions of dollars, which it uses to promote Bush’s agenda of tax cuts, energy legislation, conservative judicial appointments and free trade.

Although it takes unlimited donations from corporations and individuals, it discloses neither its contributors nor its expenditures.

Feather, in an interview, said PFA is simply a vehicle for building grass-roots support for Bush’s policies. Many other Republicans, however, described it as the first organization designed to capture some of the soft money that the political parties will be barred from accepting after Nov. 6.

PFA has strong ties to the Republican establishment. Its spokesmen include Ken Adelman, the top arms control officer in the Reagan administration. White House operatives, such as Rove and political director Ken Mehlman, have addressed private PFA briefing sessions at the Hay Adams Hotel.

Back to Powerline:

Both Jim and Susan are powerfully persuasive supporters of Judge Alito’s nomination. I understand that Judge Alito’s law clerks are holding a press conference tomorrow. I hope their comments find an outlet in the media.

Oh, I wouldn’t worry about that, Scott. Why, if you’re in the loop for this, then we can only imagine that Tony Snow is too, and so on. But as for not mentioning the Republican astroturf group that’s flying these ‘liberal Democrat’ clerks around to all these pro-Alito meetings, rallies, and press conferences, you have to understand this ‘Google’ thing, which anybody can use if they…

Oh wait, Hindrocket has a new one up.

George W. Bush is Churchill’s heir in our century.

Aaaah! They’re Stupiding faster than we can pin!

Moving slowly to keep from popping the stitches

Malkin: Hillary Clinton wants an inquiry on providing upgraded body armor to the troops, therefore upgraded body armor is bad and the troops shouldn’t have any.

Several cherry-picked and unrepresentative cites follow, and Soldiers For The Truth is tarred as a group that is bad.

Bonus Stupid:

If Senator Klintoon and “Soldiers For Truth” had their way, US troops would be put into 100 pounds of ceramic plates, be forced to conduct patrols from tanks, and live in underground bunkers. And then presumably blamed for the failure to keep the peace.

Earth to idiots: if troops wanted to be “safe” all the damn time, they would not elect to join the military. Which is a dirty, dangerous, thankless job even in peacetime. If anyone joined up to be “safe”, then may I suggest a career change?

Hell yeah, screw ‘safe!’ Let’s send ’em into battle armed with spitballs, like John Kerry wanted to do an angry Zell Miller, with a cuckoo popping out of his head, said that John Kerry wanted to do.

Oh right, that’s ‘different.’

The above solon was apparently in the Marines at some point during or after the Gulf War, although we’re interested in knowing whether he was ever, for instance, in combat. Our slight familiarity with such things leads us to imagine that combat quickly knocks the fool out of you.

With all that said, I never felt as safe as I did on convoy with fellow Marines in Iraq. I knew that I was with the baddest motherfuckers ever to walk the Earth, and knew that the “insurgents” would have nothing to do with us. I walked through the valley of death, and feared no evil.

Safer than I ever would feel walking the streets of D.C. At least in Iraq I could shoot back.

Um, what “insurgents?” Maybe we’re missing something here, but this seems to mean that you were driving around in a post-cease-fire Gulf War convoy with the Iraqi Army surrendering and/or hauling ass back toward Baghdad en masse, and no one shooting at anyone except for Barry McCaffrey and his ‘highway of death.’

Similarly, I have walked Adams Morgan in the midnight hour, and feared not the black people — but then, that’s why they call me Bad Motherfuckin’ G., ’cause I walk through the valley of…sorry, lost my train of thought there. So, what “insurgents?” You thought there might be some, but there actually weren’t any, right?

Hello-hello? Is this thing working? Ring-a-ding-ding.

Here they go again

In our 2005 review post, we wrote the following:

  • 6. Dumbest Thing Written by the WSJ Editorial Page
  • [Tied with 7,562 other things.]

But instead the U.S. Secretary of State has to put up with lectures about the phony issue of “secret” prisons housing terrorists [sic] who killed 3,000 Americans. We put “secret” in quotes because the CIA could hardly carry on operations in Europe without the knowledge of the countries involved.

    New year, same stupid:

Instead, the “controversial” NSA surveillance has been directed at people with unambiguous al Qaeda connections. Nor was it a secret in the sense of being hidden from other parts of government.

So there you go. What you have here is a clusterfuck of incoherence. On the one hand, Captain Murder Fantasy argues that the leakers of the NSA surveillance should be executed, while the WSJ finds the real scandal in the FBI building being named after J. Edgar “Rosetta” Hoover (click on the link if you don’t believe us!) Besides, it wasn’t really a secret — after all, some people knew about it!

It’s like it’s working, but different

So… the site looks ok, except for all the pictures that are missing and whatnot. Also, when you click on a permalink the page displays fine but in IE you (or at least we) get an error message:

    Zeile: 80
    Zeichen: 1
    Fehler: Object expected
    Code: 0

Firefox and Opera are happy though.

We’ll continue tweaking, but we’re going to get back to flaming. Hooray!

Here’s our logo, since it won’t show up otherwise: Logo_SN.gif (Added: Oops, guess not!)

    Yaddi Yaddi Yadda

Whoa — we were down for 2 days and this is the best we could do! You’re goddamn right this is it!

Consider the site once again operational to be pretend working — the stylesheet will be fixed tonight (our tonight, not your tonight.)

But please be very, very careful — if any of you break anything, Sadly is going to be very upset!

    Sadly, No!

… is moving to a new host today.

    Hold on to your kittens.
