An Assful of Reruns

Among the Koufaxes we’re not going to win this year is best series, for which someone nominated An Assful of Secrets, the black-and-white noir serial featuring Richard Widmark as a French-Canadian anti-wingnut detective.

It’s a pain to skip around the archives trying to find all the parts in sequence, so here are the original episodes in a special low-budge DVD edition. I might work on the formatting a bit more, switching boldface for italics or vice versa, and there are some links to add, but otherwise it’s strictly no edits. (Gah!)

There are also new episodes currently under production, according to sources familiar with the whatsit. (Ms. Grogan has agreed to work for a special low salary.)

In Which Brad R. Pitifully Asks S,N! Readers to Help Him With His Work

OK, here’s the deal:

I’m writing an article about pro-war and anti-war military families and their struggle for moral authority in the debate over the Iraq war. The trouble is, I have no idea how to define moral authority except in vague, pseudo-philosophical terms. Can any current or former philosophy student/professor out there recommend a few good essays on this topic? Thanks!

[G-Love adds: I can see this one coming, so let’s just get it out of the way…

“Et tu, Bradrocket!”

Update: Teh l4m3 got it first. Man, that was quick. Please help Brad out now, thanx.]

How many chili peppers would S,N! rank?

For users of Eudora, its Chili Pepper Rating (CPR) is undoubtebly extremely useful.

Thanks to Laura, we now know a bit more about its operation:

One interesting feature of Eudora is the “chili peppers”. If you are writing an email that contains several mild swears (“bastard,” “jackass”, “screw you”, etc.) or at least one big-time swear (“fuck”), you get assigned “chili peppers” which alert other Eudora readers that what you have to say could be offensive. You are also warned before you send the email–“Your message is likely to offend the average reader. You might consider toning it down.” Since Eudora assigns chili peppers to roughly 100% of my emails, outgoing and incoming, I naturally got curious about this phenomenon.

How can you even parody this?

It’s Jeff again.

And so all these smarmy and utterly transparent attempts to suggest that I am trying to “blame leftists for a loss in Iraq is simply the manifestation of guilty consciences bursting like boils and oiling up the internet with so much pus-thickened epiphany juice.

“Razzin’-fraggin’ you’re a pus-thickened shack-a-frack of leftist sack-flappin,’ yak-dabbin’, guilty sick-a-frass, rack-a-flack, flick-dabbin’, objectively-pro-sagga-frag…”

Wait. Okay. New game. Actually, Jeff, your smarmy and utterly transparent attempt to suggest that we are trying to “blame Jeff Goldstein” for saying that critics of the war are responsible for its failure unrealized success is simply the manifestation of a guilty conscience bursting like a boil and whatever else with the epiphany and pus and all that. Because even though we never said so,* you are in fact guilty. The fact that you dishonestly accuse us of calling you guilty means that you actually are.

See, what you fail to understand is that we are rubber and you are glue, therefore whatever you say bounces off us and sticks to you. Also, we know that you are, but what are we? Plus, whoever smelt it dealt it. In summation, we’ve got you this way (coming), and also this way (going) — and if you say we don’t, that makes it Backwards Day, which proves we do.

So, Jeff Goldstein is responsible for all the problems in Iraq. No backs, double-tax. Stop hitting yourself, Jeff! Stop hitting yourself!

This right-wing stuff is actually a great way to argue. I wish we could do this all the time.

[…] But whatever. I guess many of these lefty hive sites got tired of citing Atrios over and over again. After all, it gets rather embarrassing after a spell when you go to pick up your daily talking point, only to find it’s “Open Threadâ€? (pass it on!). So ALL HAIL THE GENIUS OF GREENWALD!

Crap. Hey Atrios, what’s the latest talking point?

D’OH!

*I believe the untruth of this statement is ultimately Mr. Goldstein’s responsibility.

Jeff/Buckley

Following William F. Buckley’s concession that the Iraq War is a fucked deal, Jeff ‘Protein Wisdom’ Goldstein takes up the genius argument that it’s critics of the war who are to blame for the failures unrealized successes of the Bush Administration’s Iraq policy.

Presumably, it’s also critics of Jeff Goldstein who are responsible for his being flamingly wrong at every turn.

Right. Anyway, we’ve heard this one before. It’s the “you jinxed it” argument.

Goes like this. George W. Bush announces that he’s going to drink a pint of whiskey and do a triple somersault off the roof onto a trampoline.

All of Us: “Urgh. Please say he’s not going to do that. Oh God.”
Jeff Goldstein: “Yay! Woohoo! Go, George!”

Bush drinks two pints of whiskey, lights some torches, pounds nine beers, and says, “I’m going ta do thish trick withoutta tram-poline!”

Us: “Oh no, someone make him stop this. This not going to end well. Oh, jeez.”
Jeff Goldstein: “Trampolines are unnecessary. Woohoo! Yay!”

Then Bush is like, “An’ I’munna do it onna unicycle. [hic] This izza bess-trick ever; watch thish…”

Us: “Holy crap, this is getting worse and worse. This is really dangerous; what an idiot; somebody do something!”
Jeff Goldstein: “This is the best trick ever! I am so totally in favor of the brilliant unicycle idea.”

So Bush throws up and slides crashing off the roof, flames everywhere, flattening a bunch of people while the house catches fire.

As the sirens approach, we’re like, “Damn it! We said over and over what a stupid trick that was. We knew this was going to happen, and nobody listened. Oh Hell, what a fricking stupid mess.” William F. Buckley, watching from his own, separate coterie close to where Goldstein is waving his balloons, shakes his head and clacks his dentures, intoning, “No, in fact you could say that the trick didn’t go terribly well. The situation really is pretty well unrecoverable now.”

So Goldstein puts on his projection-beanie and squints into his nitpicking loupe, and is all like:

[T]heir constant naysaying, though it is well within their right to voice, has objectively hurt the war effort, particularly when the criticism incorporates carefully-crafted falsehoods many of the war’s critics know for a fact to be objectively untrue.

Right. ‘Carefully-crafted falsehoods.’ Oh, mercy. Oh, that’s a good one. Follow those links if you wish to be merry.

Shorter Jeff Goldstein:
If a single tree-like thing is possibly a telephone pole, all claims about ‘a forest’ are discredited.

[Update: Missed this in the Goldstein essay the first three times through (he has a way of blowing clouds of words that expand to fit the maximum dimensions of an argument, without actually making that argument. It’s actually quite impressive):

Critics of my essay are free, of course, to misinterpret or refigure my argument any way they’d like (I envision action figure stories or kitty pictures).

“Hsftph. Indeet, ve vill zertainly take zat zuggestion oonter advize-ment.”

Bradrocket adds: Hey Jeffster, be sure to check out this A.P. video of George “Warrior King” Bush’s briefing with Homeland Security officials right before Katrina hit. It’s a perfect illustration of how utterly incurious he is about real policy matters- Christ, he makes Brownie look cognizant by comparison. If you really, really want to know why Iraq has become such a mess, look no further.

G-Love adds: It seems a good bet that he really, really doesn’t. You know, I have a short memory, but I can’t think of the last time there was a spontaneous astronomical convergence among us, The Poorman, Busy Busy Busy, and TBogg. It certainly seems as though Jeff has struck gold — if by ‘gold’ you mean being laughed at by a lot of people at once.

You’re a frog, I’m a frog, kiss me! *

There’s no place like home:

MONTREAL — In a rare public dissent, 19 Catholic priests have denounced the Vatican’s opposition to gay marriage and allowing homosexuals into the priesthood. […]

The clerics signed an open letter that ran Sunday in Montreal’s La Presse newspaper, criticizing the church’s positions on the issues. […]

“In these matters,” the letter says, “the official teaching of the church has shown itself more than once to be wrong.” [Emphasis added]

Watch out for falling objects

Snicker:

Scotland on Sunday has obtained remarkable details of one of the most memorably bizarre episodes of the Bush presidency: the day he crashed into a Scottish police constable while cycling in the grounds of Gleneagles Hotel. […]

As the President passed the junction at speed he raised his left arm from the handlebars to wave to the police officers present while shouting ‘thanks, you guys, for coming’.

“As he did this he lost control of the cycle, falling to the ground, causing both himself and his bicycle to strike [the officer] on the lower legs. [The officer] fell to the ground, striking his head. The President continued along the ground for approximately five metres, causing himself a number of abrasions. The officers… then assisted both injured parties.” […]

At hospital, a doctor examined the constable and diagnosed damage to his ankle ligaments and issued him with crutches. The cause was officially recorded as: “Hit by moving/falling object.”

The U.S. Troops Are Loser-Defeatists, Too

Hilzoy notes that reality has joined the sad ranks of loser-defeatists who are pessimistic about the Iraq war.

And according to the latest Zogby poll, America’s soldiers are dangerously close to becoming loser-defeatists too:

An overwhelming majority of 72% of American troops serving in Iraq think the U.S. should exit the country within the next year, and nearly one in four say the troops should leave immediately, a new Le Moyne College/Zogby International survey shows.

The poll, conducted in conjunction with Le Moyne College’s Center for Peace and Global Studies, showed that 29% of the respondents, serving in various branches of the armed forces, said the U.S. should leave Iraq “immediately, while another 22% said they should leave in the next six months. Another 21% said troops should be out between six and 12 months, while 23% said they should stay “as long as they are needed.

72% of the troops think the U.S. should leave within a year? That sounds dangerously close to setting a timetable for withdrawal! That’s the most loser-defeatist position ever! You might as well support John Kerry’s plan to make everyone in the Army get gay married! Hey assholes, why don’t you just change America’s motto from “In God We Trust” to “Sacr&eacute! More brie, please!” and be done with it!

Well that does it! We clearly need a different brand of soldier in the military, one who won’t question the President’s pledge to stay the course and remain in Iraq until 2150! If any recruiters out there need help in locating such upstanding young patriots, I can recommend more than a few who post over at this site:

Hmmmmm. On second thought, they look a little soft to be in the Army. Oh well, at least they can keep fighting terrorists on the home front… by blogging!!!

I Don’t Think Scientologists Would Like Me Very Much

From Rolling Stone’s excellent article on Scientology:

In [Dianetics], Hubbard denounced virtually every sexual practice that doesn’t directly relate to marriage and children. […]

In auditing, Scientologists are frequently asked about their sexual thoughts or practices, particularly in the special auditing sessions called “security checks.” This process requires a church member to write down any break with the ethical code.

Hm, I wonder what they’d say about my ultimate fantasy of hiring a gang of lesbian biker midgets to beat me up while I’m wearing a chicken suit.

Come to think of it, I wonder what any normal person would say about something like that.

You guys can forget I mentioned this, right?

One of the Best Wingnut Op-Eds Ever

I’d like to give a big, big thank you to reader Steve D., who sent me this absolutely incredible winger op-ed by some guy named Michael Westfall. It’s called “WILLIE NESLON AND AMERICAS DECADENT MUSIC INDUSTRY” and it’s truly one of the most bestest mega-awesomest all-time things I’ve ever read ever:

westphall.bmp

WILLIE NELSON AND AMERICAS DECADENT MUSIC INDUSTRY

BY MICHAEL WESTFALL

The definition of an American icon has changed over the last fifty years. For Valentines Day country singer icon Willie Nelson debuted his groundbreaking “gay cowboy song on the “anti-family Howard Sterns satellite radio program. Nelson also sang in the recent gay movie “Brokeback Mountain.

Nelson also played a benefit concert near Gay Head Lighthouse in Martha’s Vineyard, with Hall-of-Fame pitcher Gaylord Perry in attendence. A gay time was had by all. Also: gay.

This 71-year-old braided balladeer’s new “gay music holds the promise of further polluting America’s airwaves.

That sentence ranks with Hamlet’s “to be or not to be” soliloquy and Molly Bloom’s “yes” monologue in Ulysses as one of the greatest things ever written.
