Andrew Stuttaford, who, like John Derbyshire and Rich Brookhiser, is often wrong but also grown-up enough to correct some of the more batshit offerings of other Cornholians, says with regard to the Israeli-Hezbollah War:

[T]he longer this goes on, the much-vaunted Sunni/Shia split (evidenced by the notably lukewarm attitude of some Arab regimes to Hezbollah) will be overwhelmed by traditional hatred of Israel, and the need of those Sunni regimes to protect their own positions domestically, as that already poisonous hatred is whipped up still more within their countries. Those regimes may dislike Iranian adventurism in the region, but as David Gardner points out in today’s FT (link requires subscription) they fear their own people more.

A ceasefire is in America’s interest. [Warren] Christopher is right to argue for it.

What he’s saying is terribly sensible, which of course means that it doesn’t sit well with JPod, the Cornhole’s Wookiee who, in lieu of pulling people’s arms out of their sockets, likes to pull dead-tired WW2 analogies out of his own ass:

My very brief encounter with Joe Brummer’s gay BLOG

Joe Brummer is a gay activist. You probably haven’t heard of him because he’s not well-known. I entered his Replace the Lies With TRUTH blog the other day and posted a couple of gentle messages about the truth about homosexuality.

Ah yes. We all know how Guy feels about homosexuality. Click here if you need a reminder (emphasis Guy’s):

In “Will and Grace,� we have what NBC describes as a “light-hearted drama,� but let’s imagine–just what does Will actually do with his boyfriends? I apologize for the question, but now you can begin to see that “gay� is not really gay. There’s nothing “gay� about anal sex or any other male-to-male sex act. I am not trying to be provocative for the sake of shock value alone, but with good reason I ask you, when the curtain folds and the light fades to black, just what do homosexuals do with each other in bed?

So as you can see, Guy spends a lot of time thinking about what homosexuals do with each other in bed. He says it’s “disgusting,” of course, but he curiously can’t seem to take his mind off it.

There must be nothing important going on, since Bush had the time to do this:

The stars of TV’s American Idol have met US President George W Bush on the same day that he discussed the Middle East conflict with the UK’s Tony Blair.

The reality show’s most recent winner, Taylor Hicks, and runner-up Katharine McPhee were among the 10 contestants who went to the White House on Friday.

The group gave Mr Bush a harmonica with the show’s name engraved on it.

Mr Bush gave the visiting group a tour of the Oval Office and spoke to them briefly about his job.

He also encouraged them to remain true to their beliefs.

It’s hard work.

The goode Mr. Greenwald writes about David “Axis of Evil” Frum and the failures of neoconservatism:

Frum has been arguing for the last five years, at least, that Iran is an evil supporter of international terrorism and a monumental threat to the U.S. Indeed, Frum is credited with creating the phrase “axis of evil” when he was at the Bush White House, which famously included Iran, and even now is agitating for confrontation with Iran. And yet, by Frum’s own admission, the invasion of Iraq which he and his comrades so desperately wanted, has delivered control of Iraq into the hands of our arch Iranian enemies, and Frum admits that the U.S. has no realistic hope of doing anything to reverse that result.

Bush’s foreign policy: it’s like the Keystone Cops with lots of dead people.

Last night Mrs. G and I were discussing current events, such as they are. Neither of us was surprised by Lance Bass’ gaiety, and we decided that the Brooke Astor situation would make a fine setup for an episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent. We next considered the irony that the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority chairman lost his job after someone was killed by a collapse in the Big Dig, yet no high-ranking officials have been held vocationally accountable for one of the most egregious and deadly security breaches in world history. This irony, we agreed, was compounded by the eventual promotion of our national security adviser that morning to secretary of state, where her job responsibilities include preventing – or, if possible, delaying – the end of the entire fucking world. Let’s just say that I report only modest confidence in her abilities. “She didn’t even invite Syria and Iran to the goddamn peace talks!” I said through a bite of fish taco.

“Wait – isn’t that kind of like going to marriage counseling alone?” asked my wise and lovely bride.

Yes, I’m am going to plug S.Z.’s book again, for two reasons:

1.) It’s really funny.

2.) S.Z. was the first blogger that I read religiously every day. She pretty much pioneered the convention of MST3King incompetent right-wing pundits, and for that the world owes her a debt of gratitude. She has worked tirelessly over the last few years to make us laugh, and buying her super-awesome book is the very least we can do for her 🙂

UPDATE: Oh, and apparently Season 2.5 of Battlestar Galactica is out on DVD now. Be sure to pick up a copy o’ that too. (Yes, I am a nerd.)

OK, so I was planning on doing something productive with my day off, but Pastor Swank has penned two absolute jewels that I can’t resist mentioning.

I’ve just returned from 4 days on the streets in Jackson, Mississippi, fighting abortion with Operation Save America. Despite what you read in the press, OSA is a group of God fearing, Christ honoring, and patriotic Americans.

Yes, Operation Save America are just a bunch of God-fearing Americans who spend their time conducting funerals for aborted fetuses in public parks, burning copies of the Koran, and being denounced by Jerry Falwell for being too crazy… and that’s just within the last month!

They are not a street mob, as many would have you to believe, but faithful, gentle Christians who hate what is happening to America.

Yessir, just a buncha normal folks:

The Rev. Flip Benham, the leader of Operation Save America, bristled at those who might question showing a fetus to children.

“This does not traumatize our children,” Benham said. “This traumatizes the adults who would hide the horrors of abortion.”
