You’ve reached a new low when we can have a go at crap like this:
The White House on Thursday disputed an account of President George W. Bush singing the U.S. national anthem in Spanish during the 2000 presidential campaign, saying his Spanish is not that good. […]
White House spokesman Scott McClellan said the assertion did not ring true to him because, “The president speaks Spanish, but not that well.”
President George W. Bush records the weekly radio address for Cinco de Mayo in the Cabinet Room. This is the first time that a president has recorded the radio address in Spanish and in English.
Spanish President Jose Maria Aznar, June 2001:
At present, many U.S. citizens have Spanish as their mother tongue — the number, which in the next few years will be more than that of Spain’s, and a language which we hear the President, himself, speaking better and better every day.
Remarks by the President at Cinco de Mayo Celebration
THE PRESIDENT: Thank you all. (Speaks Spanish.) […] I really appreciate El Ambassador de Mexico, Juan Jose Bremer. Thank you for your kind words, thank you for your leadership, and welcome. (Applause.) I appreciate so very much Thalia for being here. (Applause.) […] And, finally — (speaks Spanish) — Emilio Estefan. Emilio, thank you very much for coming. (Speaks Spanish.) Rosario Marin is here. She is going to be the Treasurer of the United States. […] Then, and for many years afterwards, the United States and Mexico lived two very different histories, often divided by misperceptions and mistrust. (Speaking Spanish.) And we’ll always work in the spirit of mutual respect. Cinco de Mayo is a day for special pride and remembrance for people on (speaking Spanish.) […] It’s a reminder of the pride — of the proud heritage of many Americans and the warm and growing friendship between two great nations. It’s a day worth celebrating. Mi Casa Blanca es su Casa Blanca. Adios.
Adios.
Thanks to Blair for the AP link.
Bradrocket adds: For the record, the correct phrase is, “¡Lamentablemente, No!”
First Kaye Grogan, now Pastor Swank:
Now that the Spanish have decided to take over our national anthem, watch out, America. This is just the start. And the downright sad factor in all this is that the US government, in its laxity re immigration, has brought all this upon us.
We have a totally weak Congress. We have a Congress that has let down the Red States.
We have a Congress that waddles on illegal immigration, has yet to put a fence between Mexico and the US, permits Muslims to flow through our borders like water rushing through a sieve. […]
Halt this ethnic takeover of America. Stop it and with force, Congress. Stop it, President Bush. Stop it to start reclaiming America.
This passage brilliantly demonstrates the dangers of openly courting lunatics as the base of your political party. Because although you can win elections by promising to deport 11 million illegal immigrants, ban gay marriage, or use the federal government to save a near-brain dead woman in Florida, such a strategy comes with a heavy price. Sooner or later, the crazies who voted for you will want to cash in their chips, and they’re going to be very angry when they find out you can’t deliver.

Paul Mirengoff’s been all over this whole threatening-to-filibuster-Brett-Kavanaugh’s-nomination-to-the-Federal-bench thing. And by “all over,” I mean “quoting a bunch of stuff Edward Whelan wrote on NRO.” See, Whelan doesn’t think the Democrats’ objections hold any water because, well, basically, because they’re Democrats (doy). Also, Whelan cites three Carter nominees who made it to the bench despite apparent partisan sympathies, which exposes Democrats as unhinged, unprincipled and — oh, now honestly, I think you can hum this tune by now.

“I can name that tune in two notes, Travis.”
Mirengoff weighs in:
Once again, therefore, the Dems are trying to change the rules of the game, a move that Harry Reid’s misrepresentations of fact cannot mask. If they succeed, and perhaps even if they don’t, the rules are forever changed and Republicans will be within their rights if they block the next set of Mikvas, Walds, and Ginsburg’s.
Great. Thanks a lot, Harry Reid and pals. You’ve ruined it for everyone. Just because you had to get all high and mighty and threaten to use parliamentary precedure to block the nomination of a scarcely qualified partisan hack, now you’ve backed Republicans into a corner from which they have little choice than to offer you a taste of your own medicine. I certainly hope you’re proud of yourselves.
Gavin adds: You know, “Mirengoff” is an anagram of “fog ‘n’ mire” if you reserve one of the “f”s for an epithet useful while reading him.
Marie has penned a real doozy this week. Let’s check ‘er out:

Forty years of feminist philosophy has brought severe reproof for just about everything the male does. If we listen to the feminists, man is evil, stupid, and unjustly tyrannical. The feminist movement, which began in the early 60’s, has played a decisive role in denigrating the family.
Did the feminist movement begin in the early ’60s? Sadly, nope. But in the world of wingnuttia, everything bad came from the 1960s, including evolution, the free silver movement, and Islam.

Americablog has up-jumped the boogie again, this time calling down the wrath of Daily Kos.

Orange you glad you use chem-tan?
Let me make one other thing perfectly clear: Americablog is John Aravosis’ blog. He can do with it what he likes. He can even run off the people that made his blog what it is. I don’t care if Aravosis wants to crash a car into a tree, so long as its his car and his tree. No problem.
Oh God, the Bentley! The Bauhinia lunarioides!
But if he wants to use his blog to launch unsubstantiated attacks on Howard Dean then he shouldn’t be surprised if he gets called on it. And if he wants to ban everyone who criticizes this faux pas, then he shouldn’t be suprised what happens next.
There are other blogs, you know.
In fact, if it’s Americablog’s daily political coverage you’re looking for, here’s one.
We seem to keep having this problem over and over. Once again we must scrub a carbon-ashy freeze-frame silhouette off the wall, and pry lumps of metal from the floor that were once the hapless possessor’s spectacles, wedding ring, dungaree rivets, &c. This is inconvenient for everyone involved, and we’ve taken the initiative to post a short list of people with whom you should not engage in feckless argument, if we are all to avoid this inconvenience in the future. (It is not an exhaustive list by any means.)
1) Juan Cole
We’ll think of some others, but this is the one that most readily springs to mind. It simply never goes well, ladies and gentlemen. We’ve had to circle next Tuesday in our appointment book because that’s when we expect Christopher Hitchens’s ancestors since roughly Regency times, after having been belched from their graves, to come flaming back to Earth one after the next. We just looked in our big 1848 edition of Webster’s, and it has now always held an entry for the word, ‘pwned,’ with a daguerreotype of Christopher Hitchens’s ass. We went to adjust the timing in our car, and the manual now shows settings for ‘advance’ and ‘hitchens.’ In short, please stop because you keep messing things up all over the space/time continuum.
Thank You,
Your Housemates on the Left

They may be stupid, but they sure are fun!
Shorter Tony Blankley: Why don’t we just ship everybody in the whole goddamn world over here to live in America?
Shorter John Stossel: What can a chapter from my latest book tell us about victims?
Shorter Walter Williams: If current trends continue, mankind will one day delight in the spoils of a fully automated economy.
Shorter Michelle Malkin: Liberals and Mexicans have conspired to turn this once-great land over to Islamofascists.
Shorter Mike S. Adams: Whenever someone makes me feel foolish, I go home, light a big honkin’ cigar and pretend I’m Doug Giles.
Shorter Burt Prelutsky: Now that the president is freed from the burden of re-election, he should enact policies that boost his popularity.
Shorter Ben Shapiro: Now this is some judicial activism I can get behind.
Shorter Jonah Goldberg: Like Nixon, Bush’s problem is that he’s too liberal.
Shorter Kathleen Parker: As a woman, I have noticed that men are all too often the innocent victims of rape.
Shorter Mary Katherine Ham: I dare you to make fun of my column about children with cancer, smart guy.
Shorter Paul Greenberg: You know how editorial writers sometimes like to complain about following the news in a column about beach vacations or classical music? Well, this is one of those columns.
Bradrocket adds: There are some gems from this piece that demand to be highlighted:
Anti-Americanism, whether in Europe or on the American left, works by the mechanism of white guilt. It stigmatizes America with all the imperialistic and racist ugliness of the white Western past so that America becomes a kind of straw man, a construct of Western sin. (The Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo prisons were the focus of such stigmatization campaigns.)
No shit. Why should we feel guilty about torturing people anyway?
