I would like to condemn the equally disrespectful Terry Pratchett (or rather, Paul Kidby), and the incredibly disrespectful makers of Lego blocks. If there is any outrage left over, please send it to Bob Dylan and Kinky Friedman and anyone else who has ever covered The Ballad of Ira Hayes.
I ask you, if trees were not unAmerican, would one of them have killed brave patriot Sonny Bono
Sonny Bono was NOT killed by trees, that’s just a cover-up created by the LIE-brul media to hide the REAL truth. Mr. Bono, a hero of the heartland of the USA of America, was killed by blood-sucking pelicans, who become ravenous after their Winter hibernation and will attack in numbers, particularly if a person is of short stature. Rather than cause a public panic and a ruinously expensive closing of the national park system, this fraudulent story about a “skiing accident” was put out as the explanation. Frankly, I think the public deserves the truth about this attack, lest more needless death occur at the hands of these blood thirsty monsters.
Leaving aside the fact that the famous Iwo Jima photograph was staged to begin with, I still make a yearly pilgrimage to Sonny Bono’s grave in Palm Springs….to make sure that he’s still dead.
I want an authoritative list of all the taboos the right would like to enforce.
Complete, no backsies.
If they want it off limits, they need to declare it now. Thenceforth, all things NOT on the taboo list will NOT be taboo.
As long as they can declare particular icons, items, events, memorabilia, music, art and people sacred on the fly, in real time, then they get to continue and endless game of “You can’t do that!! I’m OUTRAGED”.
Nope. This is not a fair game with a level playing field. They need to choose a Minister of Twisted Panties who can declare and keep a list. The list must, as first issued, cover everything from Genesis to today. After that, as new things come to be and events warrant, they can add to the list.
Oh, a key is that they must offer a succinct explanation for why a given piece is not to be trifled with.
Oh, sure, we’d ignore them at least as much as we do now.
Adding to RiM’s comment, I should point out that as well as feeding their young by disgorging the blood they have swallowed from their victims, adult pelicans will often feed other adults who were less successful in the hunt. This is why Kropotkin described pelicans as “a perfect natural allegory of cooperation”, while Bakhunin wrote an inflammatory pamphlet in which he urged his readers to model themselves on the pelican and bring down the imperialists and their B-1 bombers.
This is also why the pelican used to be the State Bird of Albania, under the Hoxha regime.
David Attenborough made a special documentary about the blood-sharing pelicans of the Sakhalin Peninsula, but it was suppressed on the personal orders of Margaret Thatcher.

As I mentioned in a previous thread, there has been a long association (since the second century) of the pelican with vampirical motifs, in Christian sources. Even the Greeks thought that pelicans killed their young and three days later, brought them to life with a literal “blood bath”. We here in Montana have learned to hide children when there are pelicans about, as they favor victims of small stature. Someone down thread was saying that they check Mr. Bono’s grave on a yearly basis to be certain he’s dead and this is actually more sensible than may appear on the surface. You have to ask yourself *why* pelicans have been associated with blood and “rebirth” for so long, and whether the murder of their young and subsequent “revival” is more satanic than miraculous, a kind of *initiation* into the vampire life. The truth may well be that Mr. Bono, even as a hero of the heartland of the USA of America, may be one of the undead, his life taken by pelicans and brought back to a life of damnation by the same wicked birds that are now in the process of methodically trying to destroy the Australian Air Force, the same heroic wingmen that flew in President George Willard Bush’s squadron during the battle of Iraq, during which his flight suit became engorged. Those of us who are patriots of the heartland fight these bird-ghouls with fully erect M1 Battle Rifles™ that we carry at all times. The LIE-brul media has conspired to hide the truth of this matter from American patriots of the USA of America but we will fight them and win, rather than drink communist lattes in elitist bowling alleys. You are all forewarned!
Rugged, there are still thousands of pelicans in MN and many people standing at the edges of the Mississippi watching them. Do you suppose that these people are undead? I MUST say, they are beautiful birds.
I spent the day celebrating national record store day. For real. Bought new records (well CD’s) by Kate Rusby and Ray Davies. Excellent, and the pelicans approved.
Rugged, there are still thousands of pelicans in MN and many people standing at the edges of the Mississippi watching them.
FOR THE SAKE OF ALL THINGS SACRED, YOU MUST WARN THEM OF THE DANGER!! RUSH UP TO THEM AND SCREAM “THOSE ARE VAMPIRES YOU IDIOT!!! RUNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!” AS YOU POINT INTO THE SKY!! THE BLOOD OF THOSE IGNORANT FOOLS WILL BE ON YOUR HANDS, AS WELL AS THE DISPOSITION OF THEIR ETERNAL SOULS, IF YOU DON’T HELP THEM!!!!!!!!!
The Iwo photo is a second flag raising. The first one was quickly deemed too small. So they consciously went up and did it again and Rosenthal went with them to film it.
so in that sense it was staged.
However, it was still a hot battle, its not like they went back when it was safe.
Uh, are we supposed to have more respect or less respect for an invading force raising its own flag on conquered land if it’s staged or not? I’m confused.

(Seriously, the controversy – such as it was – wasn’t about the troops but about the veracity of the guy who took the picture. There’s an old urban legend that photographer Joe Rosenthal actively posed the men and staged the famous shot of the [second] flag raising. Some people still believe that [see the 0:39 post], but it’s always been clear that the picture is actually unposed. Pedantry mode off.)
Well duh! The second one has our Heartland Homeland’s flag on it!
tbogg’s nailed this one.
If the latest storm in an espresso cup reminds people of Ed Kienholz and his portable war memorial, then it’s all good.
The malkin thing has her cheeks puffed out about this one, too.
The right owns all military iconography, haven’t you people heard of Leni Riefenstahl?
Yeah, yeah, hello meester Godwin.
Cliff: That Lynne Cheney find is teh awesome.
Don’t be fooled, Timmy. That tree will photosynthesize you and everyone you care about.
I really just don’t know what I am thinking until I run it up Lynny’s or Michelley’s (signal distortion)
It would be better if they didn’t use the original photo but still and all FOR FUCK’S SAKE.
I ask you, if trees were not unAmerican, would one of them have killed brave patriot Sonny Bono? Huh?
HUH?
Slightly OT, but saw this on the linked page. Just watch for the first joke, it is beyond surreal.

I like this new Rugged. Can we keep him?
fucking pelicans.

Ok, goddammit.
Right now.

But the list itself would be hilarious…

All American children should strive to become cannon fodder for Our Glorious Leaders’ Glorious Photo-ops.
Number One: NO POOFTERS!

I love believing the stuff you post, Smut. It makes my brain feel happily full and a little drowsy. Mmm.
I often wonder about what the world looks like to other people.
I know the way I perceive the world is not considered an accurate reflection of “reality”, whatever that actually is.
In Herr Clyde’s case, I believe the world looks somewhat like a Bosch – illustrated Chanson de geste might look.
Ok, I’m trying to show off a little too…

This is not a fair game with a level playing field.
Well, juh!
What are you, new?
Ain’t nobody over on that side interested in a level playing field or playing fair. Win. At all costs, starting with dignity.
And wordpress taught pelicans to suck blood.
Is it just me or does Finkelstein look like a grown up Bat Boy? I mean, c’mon…those ears.
I am shocked and dismayed that Ms Vice-President would advocate child labor and abuse is such a manner. Shocked and dismayed.
It’s the duty of every true American to repeatedly become utterly enraged by random events or meaningless images.
Finkelstein does look like a living caricature. He reminds me of the guy on the left in this pic.
Actually, the smirking redneck is better looking.

Gonna have to go with Rugged here.
He provides historical references while all gbear’s got is an anecdote about surviving a trip to the record store.
Data’s data, after all…

I like pelicans.
Yeah, I’d say the Time magazine cover is a disgrace: “Winning the WAR on Global Warming”.
I’m sorry, but does everything need to be a fucking war in order to be taken seriously?!
Last I heard, the evidence was that the flag-raising photo was not staged.
I was in that photo, actually. No one told me it was going to be on the cover of a national newsmagazine.
pelicans are the most noble bird.
Burn the Tree!!!
Potatoes are the most noble fruit.
pelicans are the most noble bird.
Vampires have their own kind of nobility too………..but that doesn’t mean that you want to send your kids over to play at their house, does it?

If the tree floats it must be made of wood and therefore….
A WITCH!
I agree with Cal Bears, burn the tree.
Al Gore is fat.
[Drat, the htm beavis, /beavis bracketing didn’t appear around the Al Gore thing, rendering it unsilly. Sorry.]
Uh, are we supposed to have more respect or less respect for an invading force raising its own flag on conquered land if it’s staged or not? I’m confused.
Both, if it’s staged or not.
Neither, in the opposite situation.
Or all of the above.

But, but, the black kid is all the way to the left! How could that possibly mean that Republicans don’t have the interests of minorities at heart?
I object on purely aesthetic grounds… Unless that’s a palm tree, the proportoins are ALL WRONG. Sheesh.
I don’t see flag pins on the people in either cover. Bastards.
