East Coast Drinking Sadlyly

From Doodle Bean via messenger owl:

We’re thinking of gathering at the People’s Republik in Cambridge but when? Weekday Evening? Weekend Evening?*

The fact is, the Republik is a cash only bar. Would that be a problem for you? Finally, should we invite Ace?

Post your ideas in the comments. No morel jokes, ple-ee-ase!

*Full disclosure: Sadlynauts from the NYC area can attend if we have it on a weekend evening.

Oh sure. I finally come through for you guys, and no one has anything to say.

It’s not a party without the Red Army Chorus on the music system.

Wooo! I’m there, whenever.

I dunno, if this weekend is too soon, next Fri or Sat. works for me.

Damn. Just like the SanFran drinkapalooza, this one is a $600 plane ticket and 3-hour flight away.

Gavin's Fiancée

I vote for next Saturday (the 26th). It will give the New Yorkers enough time to plan to come up. Unless they feel they need even more advance notice than that.

The fact is, whoisthisdoingthissynthetictypeofalphabetapsychedelicfunkin?

That is a helluva nicer looking place than that dive on geary.

That’s not a knock. I’m pissed I’m gonna miss it.

I’m good at dive…

mikey

The fact is, the Republik is a cash only bar.

The fact is, what the hell is this? Is this supposed to be parody of me?

You make it weekends and I promise to try to drive the 4 hours down from the soon to be Canadian Province of Vermont. (Anyone know where I can stash a couple of kids for a few hours?)

PS WordPress suxxors!

I second the 26th!!!!

Where and when is the goddam Sadly Chicago Gathering? You fucking coastal elites, with your… um… coastal elitism! What about us Heartland SadNosians?! Won’t somebody think of us here in the Flyover? Before we become bitter?

P.S. — I am very big on demanding such an event, but will not lift finger one to organize. Just so’s you know.

Gavin’s Fiancée,
Shut up! I just got home! Oh… ummm… er…. Thanks, by the way!

Blue Buddha and all,
I’m thinking Saturday, April 26th also. Anybody else?

Fake Gary at 3:48,
Yes.

Javafascist,
How old are the kids?

Brad, Jeebus and that fuckin… er… lovely and not-at-all-smelly messenger owl,
Thanks!

I’ll make it there whenever it’s planned, as long as I’m not scheduled to work at 7am the morning after (or 7pm the night of). Picking a date with me is like throwing a dart. But not at me.

Nice way to step up, dBean.

Can anyone tell me if People’s Republik serves food? I mean, I absolutely want to be there, but my personal vice is calories, not alcohol. I’m not asking for gourmet, just want to know if I can count on grease & carbs, if only to soak up the alcohol…

Ace needs the action. I mean action with a live woman. Not one of those robots Glenn is so fond of. Though not a female Sadlynaught, you ladies keep yer legs closed!

Besides, imagine the humor implicit in inviting him to a bar called the People’s Republic hehe! And the hilarity that would ensue, if he actually showed up.

Gavin's Fiancée

We had dinner at the People’s Republik a couple of months ago. The addition of food service was only recent, but I don’t think they’ve ditched it. It was pretty decent pub grub, at least the stuff we had.

Where and when is the goddam Sadly Chicago Gathering?

Candy (I think it was) and I were trading comments about a Sadly Minneapolis thing. Maybe we should split the difference and try to have a midwest gathering in Madison? It’s a good liberal town where no one bats an eye if you throw up on the sidewalk.

You elitist snobs, I see how you are. Well you enjoy your bi-costal bacchanalia in San Franfrisky & The City Named After a British City. Don’t think of me. Stuck here with five bazillion Popeapalooza fans.

I hope the Baby Jesus turns your beer into Mountain Dew. [sob!]

Little old comment got mutilated late last night.
WordPress of London again.

HOkay… Spousal Unit points out that when I use the magic scroll button, PK is supposed to do “food served”, also “no smoking”, which is a plus for some of us & no suprise to the locals. (I’ll be able to go home afterwards without having to leave my clothes in the garage.)

Pandemonium Books, for all your sci-fi / fantasy / gamer nerd needs, is a couple blocks down on Pleasant Street “just off Mass Ave”. They are open till 10pm on Saturdays, and may be a suitable kid drop-off if you don’t mind them picking up geekspeek. Website is http://www.pandemoniumbooks.com .

The Cambridge chapter of Drinking Liberally meets at the Republik on Wednesday nights, FWIW.

Ah yes, joyous was the day when the Cambridge bars went smoke free. Prior to that, I had to let my drunken friends come over to my place if I didn’t want to drink alone.

We’ve wandered through Pandemonium – they seem like really nice folks in there. I guess it would depend on the age of the kids, but if they were in to painting those little figurines, or playing RPGs, there’s a whole basement set up for that kind of thing. And they sell snacks there too.

That maybe some of them will have sobered up enuf by Saturday?

The 26th is good for me. Or most other Saturday late afternoons / evenings, because I’m old & fat & married. Looking forward to F2F! (or however you kidz n hipsters phrase it these days… )

To add my 2 cents, the 26th is sort of bad for me in that it’s the day after my birthday and I’d expect a very high probability of hangover and/or further entanglements requiring time to unravel. Sunday would be easier on me, but not necessarily for the working Naughts, especially other travelers. Perhaps the next weekend?
Giving a little more time might also make it easier for those on the fringes of traveling range to find ways to come.

Wait, you guys get art for your piss-ups and we don’t? East Coast bias!

Would they accept some American Blue Jeans in lieu of cash?

“but if they were in to painting those little figurines”

Lots of figures these days come painted.

Pandemonium also does card games like Magic (and for all I know, maybe Pokemon) if those are more the speed of the yout’ these days.

N yeah, invite Ace.
Is Ann Althouse still in Brooklyn? I’ll pay for a round trip spot on Fung-Wah for her.

So when is the Old Europe Drinking Sadly? Seb?

Hooooorrrrrraaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyy!!!

See you there comrades!

Would they accept some American Blue Jeans in lieu of cash?

So we -have- decided to invite Ace?

— 26th sounds great: 7 or 8ish?

— They have the usual greasy pub food there, and while it’s cash only, they do have an ATM. However, it was out of order the one time I tried to use it. :-/

— I’ve been to the DLs on Wed. a few times (last time was the 9th): sometimes it’s only the two organizers there, other times there are a dozen people there… it’s hit or miss.

— Pandemonium has been a gaming establishment in Cambridge for around 20 years. They just moved to this location a couple years ago, and my friends in the gaming community said they’ve gone downhill since moving… but whatever.

— Across the street and a block away is the courthouse where they held gay marriages as soon as Mass. legalized it. This would make a great tourist attraction for Ace! 🙂

— Should we do something to recognize each other? A code phrase such as “Give me Ruppert or give me death” or “A spectre is haunting Europe — the spectre of Ruppert”?

After that big gay midnight marriage party, Cambridge City Hall will always be sacred ground for me. Are you near Central, Buddha? Do you meditate at a center in the area?

I live near Inman. I moved here a couple of years ago from Dayton, OH, but haven’t look too hard for meditation groups/dharma center. There are actually quite a few dharma centers scattered throughout the Great Lakes region… my theory: the “life is suffering” tenet from Buddhism dovetails nicely with the Lutherans. 😉

Inman is a great area. I have gone to the Cambridge Insight Meditation Center on Broadway for morning sittings and the Shambhala Center in Brookline. Nothing steady. I came from the Bible Belt, which does not have many meditation/dharma centers. Evangelical Fundamentalism doesn’t really dovetail with anything, it just burns out your capacity to believe in anything – which sort of works, I guess. 🙂

The 26th works for me too, but I’m pretty flexible whatever we decide. Looking forward to meeting people!

Maybe we should split the difference and try to have a midwest gathering in Madison?

Candy, that may not be suitable for middle-aged suburban guys with small children, who might find it hard to justify to their wives a Politics-n-ETOH road trip. If there were any such people in the crowd, that is.

Turns out the Heartland/Flyover isn’t really all one place after all.

“So we -have- decided to invite Ace?”

I said blue jeans, not play doh and bacon.

My vote: the 27th, please… comin’ up on the Fung Wah!

Yeah, just to make clear, the 26th means I can’t come, which would make me vewwy sad. I’d probably end up getting home from bday festivities right around when I’d have to get on a bus. Different day, pulllllleaze.

27th also works for me – if only because irony’s dying wish was to see Chairman Meow ride the Fung Wah to People’s Republik.

OK, sigh, I’ll do the 27th… was supposed to do something else that day, but can wait

Any day/time is fine with me.

The 27th great for me, too. We always have the option to start a little earlier for folks who have to work Monday – say 5-ish. Also, there is more parking on Sunday since the “Resident Only” parking restrictions don’t apply.

Cambridge is having a Science Festival starting on the 26th for you geeks from out of town. Make a weekend of it!

If you need a hotel, Cambridge’s are expensive. A more reasonable alternative might be the Holiday Inn in Somerville. It’s right on a bus line to Central Square, where the bar is. Also, it’s a short drive away.

If the cash machine at the Republik is broken, there are plenty o’ ATM’s in Central Square, about a two block walk. And, of course, the bar is right across the street from that architecturally interesting city hall, where we awful liberals started the unraveling of the Heartland’s morals!

pedestrian: I’ll take a little red book for the trip up.

Sorry if this is a dupe. The Sadly hamsters have apparently staged an undercover campaign to undermine comm functions at S,N!

I’m sorry. I’m sick and I can’t get my comments posted. I’m going back to bed.

Links are the problem, apparently. The Science Fest link is : http://cambridgesciencefestival.org/2008Festival/2008ScheduleOfEvents.aspx

If you need a hotel, Cambridge’s are expensive. A more reasonable alternative might be the Holiday Inn in Somerville: http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/hi/1/en/hotel/bossv?rpb=hotel&crUrl=/h/d/hi/1/en/hotelsearchresults

It’s right on a bus line to Central Square/ just a short drive away. Also, you might get to hear a Somerville native say, “Somerville”. It’s a thrill!

Links are the problem, apparently. Google, “cambridge science festival ” for the link.

If you need a hotel, Cambridge’s are expensive. A more reasonable alternative might be the Holiday Inn in Somerville. It’s “Quality Performer: Commendable”!.

30 WASHINGTON ST, SOMERVILLE, MA 02143
Hotel Reservations: 1 800 972 3381
Hotel Front Desk: 1-617-6281000

That hotel is right on a bus line to Central Square/ just a short drive away.

Now I’m going back to bed.

I don’t wanna be a pain, but I do wanna be able to come. Will Sunday work for Anne Laurie?

An announcement of the final date would be nice 😉

Hey, I’m part of a Russian Chorus. If you want to pay us a s$%^load of money, we’d be willing to sing, I’m sure.

Although we stick to Czarist songs.

Mike,

We’re getting to that. Is the 27th o.k. for you?

Gavin's Fiancée

The 27th should be fine for us, but since it’s a Sunday, it might be nice to switch it to an afternoon affair to allow the people who are traveling (and/or have to work Monday AM) ample time to get their Sadly on before they have to leave. The bar opens at noon…

Yeah, Sunday might be better since the citysearch site says that it gets crowded on weekends due to closing at 2AM. Doodlebean suggested 5PM on Sunday. Also, the kitchen does close early… I remember someone tried to get food shortly after I arrived to DL (maybe around 8ish) but they already closed the kitchen by then.

Sunday the 27th will work for me (us, since I may drag the Spousal Unit along) as long as it’s not too late in the evening. Starting around five PM (EDT) would hopefully ensure that the kitchen’s still open, which would be good too.

Hey you guys should invite Ann Althouse. Doesn’t she live nearby?

I’m hearing that the afternoon of the 27th would be good for people. Anybody for whom this is NOT true should let us know today.

I believe la Althouse lives in the NYC area. However, Mark “The Eyebrows” Noonan might still be local.

Could we tolerate the possibility of two wingnut morons at once, though?

Hey… didn’t the Third Coast Sadlys want to throw one in Madison? *wink wink*

27th, yes.

WordPress Sux, yes.

27th in the afternoon. That’s a final, then?

sounds good to me.

I will try to make it but I’ve got to see if someone can watch my son on Sunday night. I’m probably going to go up on Saturday afternoon to visit some friends regardless so I might be able to offer a ride up there but not on the way back if I have to leave sometime in the afternoon on Sunday. I was only kidding in my previous “gas, grass or EZ pass” comment btw.

Since Lawnguylander was bringing up Commiepinkosymp, the 27th might be a problem for the NYC area Sadlies.

Enough to take it back to the 26th, facing the crowds and the other Brad’s hangover?

Let us know!

Thanks, DB but if you’ve already got a good contingent for Sunday I’d say stick with it and I’ll do my best to make it. I can still offer a one way ride in that case.

O.K. Let’s do it!

Sunday, April 27th
5:00 pm until whenever

Passphrase: “The fact is, the fact is.”

People’s Republik
876 Massachusetts Ave (“Mass Ave”)
Cambridge, MA 02139

Look for us at the usual DL area, just to the left of the door.

Hear that, Brad? Thanks for posting it at the necessary times (sometime this weekend and then next Saturday the 26th, say)

and bring darts, as they have boards.

Passphrase: “The fact is, the fact is.”

And here I was hoping for “Shalom, gentlemen!”…

Which will not keep me from showing up next weekend, of course.
