He still had us at pornographic emails:

Harris County District Attorney Chuck Rosenthal resigned Friday under the weight of a scandal involving the release of dozens of pornographic, racist and political e-mails on his office computer.

But then he lost us here:

Mr. Rosenthal was forced off the March 4 GOP primary ballot by the scandal but steadfastly refused to resign, saying “stupidity” was not grounds for quitting.

Dude, you’re the DA — is it too much to expect of a DA that he not be a total moron?

Stupidity is a generally accepted reason to stay on a gooper primary ballot.

This is central to my point.

In his resignation letter, Mr. Rosenthal said he decided to step down in part because his judgment had been affected by a combination of drugs prescribed for him.

Drugs make you racist… that’s a new one. I can see someone being more belligerent on drugs, but something tells me his racism was there beforehand.

What, so racist perverts can’t be be district attorney? That’s discrimination!

This is Texas, dude. Stupidity is a prerequisite for public office.

This story I heard about on Harry Shearer’s radio show was about the Assistant DA

http://www.vivelecanada.ca/article.php/2008012519164553

It was a routine e-mail from the boss sent to congratulate a junior prosecutor in Houston, Tex., who had won manslaughter convictions against an intoxicated driver.

“He convicted Mr. Sosa of a double intoxication manslaughter, got a weak jury to give him 12 years in each, and then convinced Judge Wallace to stack the sentences,” Harris County assistant district attorney Mike Trent wrote in an office-wide memo. Then came the odd part: “He overcame a subversively good defence by Matt Hennessey that had some Canadians on the jury feeling sorry for the defendant and forced them to do the right thing.”

The e-mail was sent in 2003 but came to light only this month as part of an unrelated controversy with his office, forcing Mr. Trent to defend himself against accusations of bigotry — not because he offended the people of Canada, but because “Canadian” has apparently become a code word for blacks among American racists.

Hmm… What’s Patterico’s job again?

I’m voting for Mr. Rosenthal, because he is the kind of guy I’d like to have a beer with.

“Canadian” is a code-word for black?

How the HELL did they arrive at that?

I mean, aren’t Canadians aboot the whitest folks on earth, outside of scandanavians? They couldn’t come up with a better, more accurate code word than Canadian?

Yep. Stupidity is absolutely required for anyone involved in ANY way with the political right…

mikey

Perhaps racists chose “Canadian=black” precisely BECAUSE their skin colors are so different–to make sure no one will suspect who they’re really talking about. Or perhaps racists like irony. I’m not familiar with the Canadian/black thing either–I heard of it for the first time a couple of weeks ago–so I’m totally guessing.

Speaking as a Canadian, I think this racist password is in reference to the Black Canadians, similar to the Black Irish, and the Black Cubans. Namely, a subset, which we refer to in our metric language. Vive le liter!!!

Canadian used to = black over the NYPD radios and the randomness of it was the point. Who listening would be able to figure out what Canadian meant? There are also non verbal codes such as rubbing two fingers across the cheek or the back of the hand to indicate “colored” skin.

looks like your time is almost up chuck.

Wow, that’s an interesting factoid, lawn.

Hatred truly is the midwife of ingenuity, n’est ce pas?

mikey

no, stupidity is NOT a reason for quitting

but you shoulda mentioned you were stupid BEFORE YOU TOOK THE JOB

being morally bankrupt IS a reason to quit

so what’s your excuse …

So…..what do you call a Canadian who’s black, then?

Check out the photo on the KHOU.com website.

“This e-mail photo was recovered from Harris County District Attorney Chuck Rosenthal’s computer. Titled “Fatal Overdose,” it depicts a black man lying on a sidewalk, surrounded by half-eaten pieces of watermelon and an empty fried chicken bucket.”

Yeah! The privileges of total moronitude are reserved for the Attorney General of the You Ess Ay.

Mr. Rosenthal, a Republican…

what else would he be? Is there a Republican alive who isn’t a slime ball?

Have you guys heard about the Republican Senator Buttars in Utah who said This baby is black. It’s a dark ugly thing” and won’t resign?

I’d like to know more about these prescription drugs that apparently cause men of a certain political persuasion to go batshit crazy stupid with the porn and racism. Right now I’m on Advil. Should I be locking myself in the house, unplugging the phone and the cable connection?

“Canadians=Blacks” has nothing to do with skin colour. It reflects a point of view some Americans (including a couple of former American ambassadors to Canada) have about Canada i.e.
Canada is a backward undeveloped dumb little country
Canadians may or may not have paved roads yet
Canadians live in igloos and teepees
Canada is made of snow,
Santa lives just north of the US border
Canadians are stupid

and so on…

not atypical of the view these same Americans have about every other country in the world.

We used to say “reality is for people who can’t handle drugs.” Republicans are screwed as they can handle neither drugs nor reality.

Wasn’t Rudy!!! once a DA?

Yes, Rudy was Manhattan District Attorney before he became Mayor Broken Toilet Plunger Handle.

And he was a fascist then, too.

Link from http://www.dickipedia.org. I did not know that such existed, until now.

As C.W. McCall would say, he gone buh-bye.

Houston’s my former neck of the woods; Rosenthal’s pretty typical of the breed of DA from around there: i.e., self-styled frontier sheriff type, totally gleeful that Houston is the death penalty capital of the free world.

Yes, Rudy was Manhattan District Attorney before he became Mayor Broken Toilet Plunger Handle.

He may have been a Manhattan Assistant DA, but he was not the elected District Attorney (that would be Robert Morgenthau). Giuliani was the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, a federal gig.

We’re going thru the same kind of thing up here with a Community Council staff member getting fired because she just couldn’t keep her (neocon) politics out of her nonpartisan work. She was fired for it and is now suing the board for discrimination, saying that her firing ‘was mostly of a political nature, but that isn’t one of the grounds you can use, so I said it was age discrimination’. That’s an actual quote in the local paper. Great way to help your suit there, lady. Stupid.

Then the Council President, also a neocon, got booted out of the presidency for violating council bylaws by trying to do a back-room derailment of a program that the rest of the Council had spent months setting up to everyone’s satisfaction except, of course, the neocon. Stupid.

Of course, neither of them will admit to doing ANYTHING wrong and are fighting to get their positions back. Stupic and oblivious.

The reason that the neocons felt the need to take over this council in the first place is because there is a planned parenthood office in that district. Pricks.

hey, it’s texas. what do you expect.

saying “stupidity” was not grounds for quitting

Isn’t this the ultimate self-reinforcing statement anyone could make? I mean, if you weren’t stupid, you wouldn’t be IN this spot.

Houston’s my former neck of the woods…

Me, too.

Houston is the death penalty capital of the free world.

Yep. Texas has more death sentences by far than any other state in the union, and Harris County has the most death sentences of any of the state’s 254 counties… in large part through Rosenthal’s efforts. Since blacks make up a disproportionate number of those sent to death row, I can’t say I’m too surprised that this asshole is a flagrant racist.

Majikthise is covering this story too…and get this:

some of the most notorious material found on the DA’s office computer came from his personal physician, Dr. Sam Siegler. For example:

The documents do indicate the sender of one video file: It’s from a Web site showing unsuspecting women getting their clothes ripped off on public streets. The sender was Dr. Sam Siegler, Rosenthal’s personal physician, friend and the husband of Assistant District Attorney Kelly Siegler. She is now a Republican candidate for district attorney.

“I didn’t intend for it to be offensive. I didn’t e-mail anybody that I thought would be offended by it,” Dr. Siegler told 11 News. [KHOU]

It’s not clear whether Siegler prescribed the drugs that Rosenthal now blames for his downfall.

bahaha…an incestuous little group of pervert professionals

“I didn’t intend for it to be offensive. I didn’t e-mail anybody that I thought would be offended by it,” Dr. Siegler told 11 News. [KHOU]

Oh, well, how could he have known any woman would be offended that videos of her being forcibly stripped are circulated online? Women are so flighty and emotional you never know what they will think. The important thing is that he only sent it to men who wanted to see them being molested in public. He’s a real classy guy.

Dude, you’re the DA — is it too much to expect of a DA that he not be a total moron?

Not if you’re a Republican. Remember the immortal words of Sen. Roman Hruska, when one of Nixon’s Supreme Court nominees was revealed to be a total dolt. “Well,” he said, “maybe he is mediocre. But there are a lot of mediocre lawyers and judges and people out there. Aren’t they entitled to a little representation on the Supreme Court?”

As an ex-Houstonian (Harris County is Houston) I can report that Chuck is what passes in the Lone Star state as the good-old-boy’s good old boy. Down yonder, hard drinking, good-old-boy, racist, misogynistic, homophobic, ass slapping, Christian-family-values-spouting, Second Amendment loving, tough-on-crime (other peoples’) white boys are the salt of the earth. One of the many reasons I wouldn’t enter the state on a bet.

Was it not the great Tricky Dick, un-sainted Founder of Modern Republicanism, who greeted complaints about the mediocrity of one of his proposed Supreme Court choices with the immortal line “Mediocre people deserve representation, too”?

Given 30 years of Repub “progress”, perhaps they perceive themselves as secure enough to demand representation for racists, the stupid, and the stupidly racist.

In other words, Teh Repub Base…

Oh, well, how could he have known any woman would be offended that videos of her being forcibly stripped are circulated online? Women are so flighty and emotional you never know what they will think.

Years ago I heard about a group of women in Florida who mock-raped a guy who’d raped one of their friends. They arranged for him to meet them in a park, jumped him, ripped off his clothes, tied him up, and humiliated and threatened him for an hour or so. When he started sobbing and begging them to stop they figured he’d learned something about his own behaviour.

TR beat me to it — and even spelled out the details. I swear his comment hadn’t loaded before I typed mine. Damn you, dialup!

Thanks for that correction, I do like to have my facts straight when I’m fling the pies.

Here’s a quote dickipedia needs in their summary:

“Just because we didn’t bring charges doesn’t mean he’s innocent.”

Dude, you’re the DA — is it too much to expect of a DA that he not be a total moron?

Uh, look who the president is….

some of the most notorious material found on the DA’s office computer came from his personal physician

You know, I don’t get this. I don’t get this at all. After all the fuss about emails during various scandals; after all the corporate seminars about emails; with all public employers drafting strict internet use policy – oh, yes, I work for a small public agency, and I know whereof I speak – why do people in a leadership position time and again not FUCKING GET IT about email?

Use a personal email account for personal email.

It’s not only that they should be fired for mendacity, racism, and unethical behavior – they should be fire for being the Stupidest Public Servant on the Planet!

I gotta admit though, that overdose photo had me laughing. Does that make me a racist?

You could make the case that as an explicit play on stereotypes, it’s not necessarily racist per se, but is merely about racism. You’d need to look at the context in which it circulated — which in this case militates quite strongly against that charitable interpretation.

My feeling is that as comment on racism, it’s wry and ironic; as racism itself, it’s quite inept. But then as a New Zealander I have, as you might expect, a tin ear when it comes to race relations in the Benighted States.

is it too much to expect of a DA that he not be a total moron?

It would be a plus if I were being prosecuted by him, anyway.

The fact is, liberals are faggots.

Sam Thornton on Chuck Rosenthal:

Down yonder, hard drinking, good-old-boy, racist, misogynistic, homophobic, ass slapping, Christian-family-values-spouting, Second Amendment loving, tough-on-crime (other peoples’) white boys are the salt of the earth.

That pretty well describes the scumbags who ran Houston when I was a kid there long, long ago. Back then they were old-fashioned Southern Democrats rather than modern-day wingnut Republicans, the Christianity was taken for granted rather than shoved in your face, and the racism was much more overt, but for the most part Rosenthal sounds like one of the flamboyant, aggressive, arrogant, corrupt good-old-boy pricks of yesteryear.

One good thing about growing up in Houston back in the day was that it was a great place to learn who the bad guys were, since they didn’t try to hide the fact that they were sons-of-bitches. Jerks like Rosenthal helped make me a life-long lefty. Thanks, Chuck!

The fact is, even faggots wouldn’t stoop to fucking with Gary Ruppert.

The fact is, class warfare. Envy. Jealousy of the productive class, and bias toward hippies and other leeches made you liberals left morans what you are.

These days nearly all the elected officials here in Houston are Republican, including judges. Racism isn’t usually that overt, as Snorhagen says, but it definitely still exists, as does rampant sexism.

As for the gary types, I bet you anything he’d rather have someone here watch his back than one of his Republican buddies, if he could pull them out from under a bed. After all, he’s hanging out here and not someplace else. He must secretly admire liberals.

The fact is, Gary’s acquaintances are wondering which side Gary’s on because he’s over at SadlyNo’s 24/7 hangin’ with the lefties.

To be fair, you can’t blame him. We’re smarter and more fun. Were he not merely an unfunny parody troll, one would have to wonder why he would cling to a belief system that has so twisted his brethren that he can no longer find enjoyment in their company.

The Productive Class

Gary Ruppert… Gary Ruppert… nope, sorry, never heard of him. You might want to check under “Waste of Cheetos”

Holy shit. Gary Poopsquirt. You are still obsessing about gays?

After all the fuss about emails during various scandals; after all the corporate seminars about emails; with all public employers drafting strict internet use policy – oh, yes, I work for a small public agency, and I know whereof I speak – why do people in a leadership position time and again not FUCKING GET IT about email?

A friend of mine retired from the local police force and now does computer security gigs for the City and County, as well as private clients. He was hired to conduct a study and make recommendations about how to best beef up computer security on the police computer network in the wake of 9/11. This friend discovered that people were not only conducting their personal side-businesses online, but downloading porn, gambling, sending threatening e-mails, loading personal software onto the system, etc. etc. ad infinitum. The friend filed his report, which was discreetly shelved by the Powers that Be, because they were some of the worst offenders.

And lawyers are some of the worst dumbass technotards….

We have a “net nanny” at work that frequently prevents me from being able to do my job on the office computer. A few years ago I was doing some research about a depressed community and I kept getting “FORBIDDEN” messages because the sites happened to describe prostitution, the drug trade and HIV. One site blocked by the nanny belonged to a member of parliament for the area. I ended up using my own computer to get the task done.

Spam filters I get but net nannies are totally ridiculous. The only arsehole I ever heard of abusing the system was a manager who visited porn sites and he ended up getting a promotion.

“stupidity” was not grounds for quitting.

Somebody shoulda told Spiro Agnew, Richard Nixon, Tom Delay, Donald Rumsfeld, Alberto Gonzalez, Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney, Sam Brownback, Duncan Hunter, and Tom Tancredo that. They could still be trying to terrorize the gay hippies that outlasted them.

The fact is, Mr. Rosenthal is a good conservative American from the heartland, who is going to win the election no matter how many stupid liberals call him ‘stupid’.

We can all be thankful for the wisdom of the Harris County, Texas, authorities in choosing reliable, all-American, liberal-proof Diebold voting machines.

Gary,

Excellent parody! I needed a good laugh this morning!

Ahh, a racist DA?

I’m not sure but I think every person of color who was EVER prosecuted by the moron gets a free lawsuit…

Its obvious Rosenthal couldn’t separate his work from his personal life.

We have a “net nanny” at work

Oh, we do too. It’s quite forbidding, getting the white screen with the stern blue letters and the City seal, telling you it’s an unauthorized site. You can’t go to Myspace; Nanny seems to have a particular animus towards sports and music.

I’m told the sports prohibition is because in the past, employees have gone online for betting or for office pools for games.

But some forbidden sites don’t make a lick of sense. For example – our City Council meeting are broadcast on a local NPR station, but as employees, we are unable to access the NPR station site and listen to our own council meetings,

I’ve found, though, if I request it, the network guys will allow me access to a forbidden site. One of my clients is a promoter of sporting events – he actually rents our facility to do this. The Nanny prevented me from going to his site so I couldn’t see his promotions! A simply request, they let me access it.

The best is Chuck getting arson charges dismissed against his friend, State Supreme Court Justice David Medina. Six members of the grand jury who indicted Medina and his wife for torching their house are so ticked off at Rosenthal, they filed a lawsuit against him this week.

Smiling Mortician

Drugs make you racist… that’s a new one.

Hm. Alcohol seems to be more efficient, as it makes you both sexist and anti-Semitic.

Psst.

Stephen Colbert’s on-line handle is Gary Ruppert. Nothing else can explain the daily comedy gold emitted by said poster.

-GSD

Excellent parody! I needed a good laugh this morning!

Th’nkyew. Th’nkyew very much. Faggot.

Spam filters I get but net nannies are totally ridiculous. The only arsehole I ever heard of abusing the system was a manager who visited porn sites and he ended up getting a promotion.

Last job, I shared the office with the geek in charge of IT, and it was quite revealing when he told me about the various infractions. The things that people are into, I tell you.

His opinion of blocking sites was limited to the ones that took up a shitload of bandwidth, or were full of spam and/or limited security. He particularly hated MSN messenger and similar sites. He also showed me how the netnanny sites were set up, which he thought was a real waste of time. My favorite blocked sites were any sites with the word ‘sex’ in them. Fair enough, you would think, unless you tried to access “Sussex”, “Essex”, etc, which would be legitimate.

So…..what do you call a Canadian who’s black, then?

Jerome Iginla.

Houstonian here; here’s the scuttlebutt:
“Canadian” was chosen for its irony to hide racism (little known fact: there are no actual Canadians in Houston!).
Rosenthal had gotten delusions of invulnerability because of his powerful connections: he recently dismissed a case against a Republican judge just after a grand jury had indicted him, infuriating many Houstonians; his relationship with an employee had become very public and very embarrassing. As with the Bush administration, local Republicans can’t keep a lid on their corruption because they lose perspective about what they can get away with.

I like this:

“I have been trying to restore my family as a unit, but the constant media pressure had made that restoration more difficult,” he said.

“I’ve been trying to talk my wife out of divorcing me and taking everything I own, but getting caught is really making it more difficult.”
