You know John, they have books about the internet
It’s easy, it lets you make just about any point you want, it kind of looks scientific. What is it? Using Google search results to make the point that Democrats are scum. Latest to join this movement is John Leo:
As a test of the state of “Bush the Nazi” rhetoric, I went to Google and typed in “Bush is a Nazi” and got 420,000 hits, well behind “Hitler was a Nazi” (654,000 hits), but then Hitler WAS a Nazi and had a 75-year head start. (Computer searches like this are very crude instruments. They sweep up many references that cannot fairly be listed as slurs. But they do offer a rough idea of the amount of name-calling. [No shit!])
President Clinton did fairly well in the Nazi sweepstakes (158,000 hits, but that’s only 20,000 references for each presidential year, compared to 120,000 annually for the 3 1/2 year-incumbency of George Bush.) The odd thing is that I typed in the names of every Nazi I ever heard of, excluding only Hitler himself, and the group total was still less than George Bush gets alone. This might indicate that either that George Bush is by far the second most important Nazi of all time, or that the Democrats and the left now require some sedation.
Yet as anyone likely noticed, John did not actually enter “Bush is a Nazi” in Google, because if he had he would have gotten 837 hits, not 420,000. (We got 404,000 at 9:10AM EST.) We got 215,000 hits for Clinton and Nazi.
But searching for George Bush Nazi only produces 252,000 hits, not far ahead of Clinton Nazi’s 215,000.
But don’t call now! Clinton and rape turns out 257,000 hits, while Clinton and murder checks in with 537,000 hits. That’s even more than Bush and Nazi. [And isn’t it great that once Google indexes this post there will be one more of all those entries to be counted?]
And by the way John:
A modest suggestion: Democrats might want to ease up on the Nazi rhetoric and stick to actual arguments. Our politics are poisonous enough already.
Go fuck yourself.
PS: The following words are very common and were not included in your search: John Leo is a clueless fucktard.
It’s so nice that Leo continues to be employed. Most companies would fire anyone so obviously ignorant of modern information technology.
I don’t have the stomach to actually review 847 documents, let alone a random number of hundred thousand. However, I think it’s pretty likely that the vast majority of those docs returned are actually rethugs SAYING that liberals say B is an N (dodged that one!).
Still, you gotta hand it to Leo: Not only did he google something, he also did long division! Clearly, he’s some kind of Renaissance man. (And I mean that in a bad way.)
Actually, he probably DID type in *Bush is a Nazi* – without quotation mark qualifiers (i.e. for a phrase, rather than the unconnected words), it returns 411K.
One would have hoped that since he does post to Uexpress, have embedded links in his tripe-that-attempts-to-pass-for-opinion, and so forth, that he would have a semblance of a clue. Perhaps he will get one, and gain sufficient ‘Net skills, just as soon as he finds the “Any” key.
“I cried because I had no shoes, until I met a man who had no clue”
You know, if you type in “John Leo” and “porn” you get 2,350 hits. Whether this proves that John is known for being a big producer or consumer of porn, or whether people are just saying it, I can’t be sure.
How about a search for “bush succeeded” vs “bush failed”?
No name-calling involved…just a check on perceived performance.
You’ll be surprised with just a quick review of the “succeeded” results.
If there’s justifiable enthusiasm that bush is doing a fabulous job, on anything, it should show up….right?
I went back and dug up what I had found on the search I did a month ago for “succeeded/failed”…
success vs failure in bush’s administration.
I did 2 google searches. One for “bush administration has succeeded” and one for “bush administration has failed”.
There were 4,750 entries for “…failed”
There were 364 entries for “…succeeded”
Now it’s pretty obvious that when one speaks of failure they mean failure.
On the other hand, let’s review some of the entries for success.
the Bush administration has succeeded in eroding the moral legitimacy of the War on Terror
the Bush Administration has succeeded in decimating the federal budget
the Bush administration has succeeded in uniting
disparate Iraqi groups in opposition to Washington’s occupying forces.
The Bush administration has succeeded in making the world a much more dangerous place, replacing diplomacy with dictatorship, co-operation with conflict and reconciliation with rancour.
the Bush administration has succeeded only in creating another failed state that can serve as a staging ground for more international terror
the Bush administration has succeeded in moving OSHA yet one more step toward becoming a completely toothless tiger.
the Bush administration has succeeded at turning America into exactly what it is the rest of the world was afraid we were becoming, the world’s biggest bully.
the Bush Administration has succeeded in freezing the United States into several no-win positions.
The Bush Administration has succeeded in dividing the world at a viral rate.
If the mission was to destabilize Iraq and create a new front for terrorists in the Middle East, the Bush Administration has succeeded grandly.
the Bush administration has succeeded in weakening most of the environmental rules that emerged from the awareness raised from the first Earth Day.
The Bush administration has succeeded in convincing itself that it is going to rescue the world by making it more like America and less like it is.
The Bush Administration has succeeded in “changing the tone” back to the days of pessimism, when partisan politics pitted businesses against clean air and water.
the Bush administration has succeeded in razing the image of the nation to the ground in a few years thanks to its wrongful policies and they inflicted damage upon America much more than what Osama bin Laden did.
That sure is some record of “success”.

Well said – Fucktard is my favorite word and it applies to everyone in the present administration
I did the same search (bush is a nazi–no quotation marks) and the second entry is to a link about the ad on Bush’s site comparing Gore, et al, to Nazis.
Other links mentioned the Bush family’s financial connections to Nazi Germany. Even “Bush is no Naxi” sites popped up.
His implication (and, yes, I have a keen grasp of the obvious) that each one of those hits says “Bush is a Nazi” is for shit. What a maroon.
I got 848 for “Bush is a war criminal” (with quotes). Almost the same number as the “Bush is a nazi”.
Which is amazing, because Bush really *is* a war criminal.
Jeebus, hasn’t anybody heard of Google Fight?
Now that’s the kind of civil discourse I can fully endorse!
Perhaps I should use this to text John leo’s theories. I wonder how many hits “John Leo, Jonah Goldberg, and Glenn Reynolds hip” would turn up?
lucky for john leo he was blowing smoke into his own cloud chamber and not posting at, say, metafilter for instance; they would have torn him seven or eight new ones. even the people who agreed with him.
i play with google too, but it’s like dan conner talking to his son DJ: “you know what son – everybody does it, but nobody really ever talks about it.“
Some of the earlier Bush clan helped bankroll the Nazis so were ton of links about that which skewed the search results.

Uh, oh, John Leo’s on the internet!Apparently he got the new AOL 9.0 with topFallacy technology, the one that allows you to make illogical arguments up to 8 times faster than dial up….
Why didn’t Leo figure Bush I in his long division?
Okay:
hitler is a nazi – 691,000
bush is a nazi – 395,000
clinton is a nazi – 214,000
kerry is a nazi – 109,000
Google of course ignores the “is a”. And pretending to be an idiot, I didn’t put quotes around any of this.
It appears that Bush’s Nazi quotient is well above clinton+kerry. On the other hand, the notion that Bush is more often called a Nazi than Hitler is just a lie, and if this dude really says this, he needs to cheney himself.

Maybe yuo’re looking for the wrong thing… You wouldn’t have a problem if you looked for a wealthy individual who’s also a unelectable miserable failure.
Blogs are the greatest thing that ever happened to Leo. He can’t write a column these days without name-dropping all the usual suspects; sullivan, reynolds, kaus, etc. He should be paying these guys royalties.
huh huh huh … you said fucktard …
I did the “bush is a nazi” google search, and three of the ten entries on the first page are from…John Leo.
Go figure.
“Clinton and rape turns out 257,000 hits”
Could it be because Clinton was actually accused of rape?
Nah.
It ought to have occured to Leo that one reason why there are so many links between “George Bush” and “Nazi” is because Chimpy’s granddad was actually in business with the Nazi regime…right up until early 1942.
And that’s not hate speech but actual history.
Ed, that’s BS liberal history revised, all lies. Prove it.
Here’s a little bit from the Straight Dope column by Cecil Adams:
The central charge against Prescott Bush has a basis in fact. In 1942, under the Trading With the Enemy Act, the U.S. government seized several companies in which he had an interest. Prescott at the time was an investment banker with Brown Brothers Harriman (BBH), which had funneled U.S. capital into Germany during the 1920s and ’30s. Among the seized companies was the Union Banking Corporation (UBC) of New York, which was controlled by German industrialist Fritz Thyssen. Thyssen had been an early financier of the Nazi party–in fact, in 1941 he published a book entitled I Paid Hitler. Ergo, Prescott helped finance the Nazis.
The whole column can be found here.
Funny he didn’t come back to admit it was real history when the Dark Avenger proved it for me, isn’t it?
heh. i tried to find a way to contact bill clinton today, because of the Corrine Brown censure debacle and disgrace, because he should use that influential voice now and again to decry what is happening to democracy, and all I could find was right wing hate sites. Tell you what, they’re winning, and we’re a bunch o dufuses if we think otherwise.
