The death of our media

Add CNN to the list of news organizations that I will be happy to see go bankrupt:
Erickson joins the Best Political Team
Prominent conservative commentator and RedState.com editor Erick Erickson will join CNN as a political contributor, appearing primarily on CNN’s new show John King, USA¸ the network announced Tuesday.
Erickson, a self described “obsessive news junkie” who grew up in Dubai and rural Louisiana, will also provide perspective and commentary on other programs across the network.
“Erick’s a perfect fit for John King, USA, because not only is he an agenda-setter whose words are closely watched in Washington, but as a person who still lives in small-town America, Erick is in touch with the very people John hopes to reach,” said Sam Feist, CNN political director and vice president of Washington-based programming.
A few things:
- Erickson lives in Macon, GA. It has a population of nearly 100,000 people. That is not “small-town America.”
- Erickson has a J.D. from Mercer’s Walter F. George School of Law. I’m not sure what the percentage of Real Americans who have law degrees, but I’d imagine it’s pretty goddamn low.
- Erickson’s ham-handed attempts to privatize his own city’s police force suggest that he rather lacks a common touch when dealing with working-class people..
What irritates me about our media isn’t so much that they go out of their way to find people from the American Heartland to be on their shows to give the perspectives of Real Americans (though that does irritate me, don’t get me wrong). No, what really ticks me off is that the Real Americans they invite onto their shows and newspapers (see also: Domenech, Ben) know just as much about Real America as I do.
UPDATE: Steve Benen does a good job of breaking down Erickson’s greatest hits:
For example, it wasn’t long ago when Erickson explained his belief on why the left has a stronger online presence than the right. He attributed it to an asymmetry in free time, since conservatives “have families because we don’t abort our kids, and we have jobs because we believe in capitalism.”
This is the same Erickson who recently called retiring Supreme Court Justice David Souter a “goat f–king child molester,” referred to two sitting U.S. senators as “healthcare suicide bombers,” praised protesters for ‘tell[ing] Nancy Pelosi and the Congress to send Obama to a death panel” (he later backpedaled on that one), and described President Obama’s Nobel Prize as “an affirmative action quota.”
And perhaps my personal favorite was the time, just last year, when Erickson was angry about new environmental regulations relating to dishwasher detergent. He told his readers, “At what point do the people tell the politicians to go to hell? At what point do they get off the couch, march down to their state legislator’s house, pull him outside, and beat him to a bloody pulp for being an idiot?”
I personally have no problem with people who use naughty language or people who say mean and nasty things about our elected officials. I have no problem with people who do such things appearing on television on a regular basis. Hell, I do these things and I would love to appear on television on a regular basis (and yes, the problem is I have a face for telegraph, I freely admit it).
The trouble is that it’s perfectly OK so hold such views if you’re a Republican but not if you’re a dirty hippie. Amanda Marcotte was drummed out as John Edwards’ campaign blogger despite the fact that she had never done anything as insane as calling for violence against elected officials. But she was a cuh-wazy feminist so she clearly didn’t have the right to say such uncouth and uncivil things.
That lie-beral MSM!
Seriously, they’re puttin Erick on TV? But he has the face for radio…
The fiction of liberal media bias: just an excuse for the corporate media to brown-nose the Right ever more.
~
Well, they do have the problem that a lot of real Americans have a problem with bald-faced lying…
Seriously, they’re puttin Erick on TV? But he has the face for radio…
Not to mention a voice for telegraph.
…and are considerably more intelligent and able to handle nuanced arguments than the Repubs would like.
Seriously, they’re puttin Erick on TV? But he has the face for radio…
And a writing style for a dumb-show.
[Erickson is] an agenda-setter whose words are closely watched in Washington
Dear God.
Erick Erickson will join CNN as a political contributor
Which assumes he has anything to, you know, contribute.
I had some witty link text to put with this but FYWP becoz it won’t let me 🙁

Fuck CNN.

Are you kidding? I think He’s yucking it up over this. (Of course, I believe in a Descartes-style Master Deceiver who has created our reality, but that’s a topic for another thread.)
CNN has a Department of Standards and Practices, but only staffs half of it.
Not to mention a voice for telegraph.
Heh. I’ve never heard it, but I’d imagine it’s sort of high-pitched and phlegmy in a weinery way.
Way to go CNN! This will do wonders for your credibility!
the Real Americans they invite onto their shows and newspapers (see also: Domenech, Ben) know just as much about Real America as I do.
Together with the fact that “Real America” is a fiction in the first place.
Hey, how about a little injection of hilarity from Sandy Rios?
You think that’s as low as they can go? That ain’t as low as they can go. I figure they’re in talks to put Breitbart and his cornhole stooge O’Keefe on TV, too.

Start that thread, Brad!
But On-topically, (ointment?) Erick Eric Erik Erickckson is a walking, talking lie. Perfect for TeeVee!
Together with the fact that “Real America” is a fiction in the first place.
Yeah, there’s also that. Not to mention that at least 40% of people in Real America vote for Democrats (and at least 40% of people in Fake America vote for Republicans).
By the way, Erick has started protecting his tweets. So he’s not even mature enough to keep himself from TYPING bullshit in a public forum. Good luck with that, CNN, you fucking assholes.
But before we go about wringing our hands, remember that Glenn Beck had a show on CNN, and Michael Savage was on MSNBC for a while. I have a feeling Erickson isn’t going to last long.

I wonder if the proper response to this is to start calling for the deaths of CNN anchors and execs. And maybe to actually cause a few of them to die. And then to laugh about it.
“Why you offended that we said you should get gut-shot and impaled on rusty pitchforks, John King? Your contributors think it’s awesome. You mean you can dish it out, but you can’t take it? By the way, I made you a plate of brownies. Ignore the aftertaste of bitter almonds.”
It’d be a funny idea to keep sending them email in the form of quoted Ericksson bits, putting John King in the place of Obama.
BTW, he posted that Souter thing TWICE.
And is it wrong that this made me lol? The sad thing is, I think that might be a good picture of him.
“Erickson lives in Macon, GA. It has a population of nearly 100,000 people. That is not ‘small-town America.’ ”

Erickson will last just long enough so that CNN will lose major advertisers (hello Survival Seed Bank and Gold Line!), but his RedState

I’m not really sure where this falls in the scale of regularly occuring mind-numbing media stupidity. It’s worse than say, your average Cookie Roberts and Friends Helen Lovejoy weekly sunday morning thought conformity festival, and not as bad as say, Rupert Murdoch buying out the WSJ, but is it better or worse than Marc Theissen getting a WaPo column or Bill Kristol still managing to not collapse into a black hole the way Hawkingian physics demands he must?
What’s the over/under on when EE says something too stupid/offensive/abusive/racist to ignore and CNN cans him? (We could use Rush’s tenure at ESPN as a baseline.)

Sorry. I shed no tears tears for Amanda Marcotte. Woman’s a plagiarist who steals without attribution from Feminists of Color.
That being said, Erickson’s a tool and CNN is totally on crack. Seriously, WTF man?
When they lost Beck, they had to find someone even more bugfuck insane to replace him.
The Macon metro area has over 230K people. Definitely East Coast liberal big city establishment ay-leets.
You mean she writes about something other than NiceGuys(TM)?
He attributed it to an asymmetry in free time, since conservatives “have families because we don’t abort our kids, and we have jobs because we believe in capitalism.”
Republicans housewives have to get their little angels off to school, then there’s hounding liberals off the mommy board, Bible study, and drinking until Joe the accommodating neighbor drops by to “clean” the “pool.” Busy busy busy!

Exhibit A: Joe the Plumber, whose basic premise was that working Americans could relate to the hardships suffered by a man with a $250,000 salary. Oh yeah. This just keeps getting better and better.
Doesn’t Erk going on CNN destroy his Teabagging credentials? Isn’t he one of the enemy now?
And, how is he going to be a fire-breathing Wingnut on RedfaceState and sound reasonable on CNN? If he backslides to some moderate position (and you know he will to keep that plush gig on TeeBee) he gets hammered by the poltroons.
I don’t thinkThere’s no way he can manage his angry mob of Redfacestaters.A Trike Force Rebellion looms.

I saw that movie on Cinemax last night, too!

Quick! Send him Darth Vader masks! Y’know, because he’s on CNN and James Earl Jones and…oh, fuck it.
Why is CNN hiring Captain Morgan?

I don’t think he was handing out tissues, just pointing out the way lefties are punished while righties who say much worse are rewarded.
Of course the media is liberal. Everyone knows that. Every time I turn on the Teevee or the radio or open up a newspaper or walk past the new release section of Barnes & Noble I’m told how the media is too liberal and right wing views aren’t given enough representation. When was the last time that anyone with a national audience complained that the media is conservative?

“Of course the media is liberal. Everyone knows that. Every time I turn on the Teevee or the radio or open up a newspaper or walk past the new release section of Barnes & Noble I’m told how the media is too liberal and right wing views aren’t given enough representation.”
Probably the most ironic thing being, as you point out, that most of the bellyaching you hear is coming straight from the media itself. (TV stations like Fox, web sites like PJTV, magazines like the National Review, newspapers like the Moonie Times…)
Please, someone say something hilarious to keep me from tearing out my hair over the fact that some of our fellow citizens are vile, unrepentant sociopaths.
Funny, the comments on the CNN page announcing Erk’s Big Adventure on Teebee have been closed since 10:27 this morning. All but a couple of the comments were negative to Erk’s hiring.
CNN Foobullet?
This is just getting fucking stupid. I know it’s fun to stick a microphone in front of Homer Simpson’s evil twin, but shit, how far do they intend to take this?

The problem is that, in a sense, the media really are out of touch. They genuinely believe that everyone in America’s Heartland is an insanely reactionary right-wing douchebag. Why? Because all of the people rambling on about “real America” insanely reactionary right-wing douchebags. This creates a feedback loop – the more people like Erickson there are on the air, the more people believe that those people really represent the Heartland. The more people believe that, the more likely they are to put people like Erickson on the air, and ’round and ’round we go. I swear we’re not all like that, but how would you know?
There might actually be a simpler explanation, however. The modern media are very lazy. I wouldn’t be shocked if someone at CNN, wanting to find a right-winger to promote, simply grabbed the first (relatively) high-profile name he saw. There’s simply no way that anyone vetted Erickson, even in the most cursory fashion. Whoever hired him really didn’t care.
Finally, if you want my opinion on Amanda Marcotte, click the name. If I never again hear a liberal blogger praise her writing, it will be much too soon.
Sorry, shopped. Here’s the original: http://www.siawi.org/local/cache-vignettes/L330xH494/iranwomanprotestor-8b2e8.jpg
the more people like Erickson there are on the air, the more people believe that those people really represent the Heartland.
I used to infest the Air America blogs when that network started in 2004, and nearly every day for the first year, someone new would come on from a red state and say how glad they were for AAR because they felt completely isolated.
I credit AAR for a lot of the Democratic victories in 2006, because people suddenly realized they were not alone, that there was hope.
AFAIK the evidence for that is that she didn’t say “thank you” to the right people.
Jesus, T&U I didn’t need to read that.

I dunno about the title to this post, Brad. I mean, American Media died an ignominious death at least 15 years ago.
This? This is just pissing on the grave.
Finally, if you want my opinion on Amanda Marcotte, click the name. If I never again hear a liberal blogger praise her writing, it will be much too soon.
I’m going to have to disagree. Moe Tkacik is the worst writer on the internets, and the fact that she worked at the Wall Street Journal is much worse than anything Marcotte has achieved.
But perhaps I’m being unfair, as I haven’t really read anything she’s written since her Jezebel days.

T&U, that was my feeling when I read that article. That MM article just proves that the Right only cares about healthy, rich, white males. They mustn’t understand the way demographics are changing in this country.

Hey, turns out humor wasn’t what I needed, but references to violence! Thanks!
That MM article just proves that the Right only cares about healthy, rich, white males.
Here’s the thing–everybody, at some point in their lives, is going to be sick and probably disabled. The fact that they can’t even extend just a teeny weeny leettle bit of compassion for someone who has had the misfortune to be sick not only indicates their sociopathic tendencies, but also indicates their pants-pissing, immature, and short-sided understanding of sickness and death. Our ability to deal with poor health and death on an emotional level is really stunted in this culture, and nowhere do you see it better than among the rightwingers.
Marion from Savannah (if she’s really from Savannah) is exactly right. No matter what the commie census sez Macon is a really small town in every sense of the word. (gm in Brantley Cty, GA)
But it’s the Big M!
T&U is on a roll today! Or maybe we just share the same ideas. Great minds and the like, also, though.
It is a head-shakable shame that even a cancer patient isn’t immune from the Right bile.
There was an article in the BBC a few weeks ago about how people in our country vote against their own interests. The underlying cause, according to the article, is the fact that people in the US respond to stories, not facts, in regards to political issues (how health care is a political issue and not a moral one, I do not know). Unfortunately, the GOP is better at “story telling” (nooooo, really?!) and people latch on to that. Again, unfortunately, when Dems get a good story to illustrate their position, the Right just bashes everything involved — including the severely ill.

If they want to put an overly opinionated small-town American on the TeeVee, why don’t they choose my mother-in-law. It will keep her busy (and hence keep her from her occasional attempts to annoy my wife). And she has the advantage of not only thinking she knows everything about anything (which is an important characteristic for a TeeVee pundit to have) but also of being from a bona fide small town (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandersville,_Georgia).
Except she is black. IIRC the rules of what makes one a “real American”, I think they include being white.
Of course the media is liberal. Everyone knows that. Every time I turn on the Teevee or the radio or open up a newspaper or walk past the new release section of Barnes & Noble I’m told by some conservative pundit how the media is too liberal and right wing views aren’t given enough representation.

Meh. Media conglomerate hires neocon pinhead, film at 11.
CNN’s breath still reeks of Bush’s taint – nearly a decade of frantic 24/7 tongue-swabbing will do that – so it’s not as if they have any integrity to lose at this point anyway. I give him 2-6 months before viewers with active EEGs rage at his chronic stupidity hard enough to get him a pink slip.

The most important thing to know about Real America is that very few people live there.

Here’s real American, all cocksucking media fucks: my family showed up on the friggin Mayflower. That’s right, the famous boatload o’ cranks from 1620 or whenever it was. I remember it was cold out. Not just one side of the family. Both goddamn sides. It’s a wonder I don’t sit on a bridge and play the banjo all day.
My peeps fought in the fucking Revolution, the War of 1812, the Civil War, World Wars I and II, Vietnam, and all that other military adventure bullshit that gives everybody such a big bloodstained hard-on in this murderous nation of thieves.
Erick, Son of Erick? Fuck him. There weren’t any Scandinavians on that boat, bitches. And Lief Erickson didn’t leave an address when he showed up, so tough shit, no win. I’m the real America, you shitgrubbing CNN goat-diddlers. All these other assholes are just recent immigrants. They don’t know anything about the real America.
I guess what I’m trying to say is I’m tired of this nonsensical idea that the “real” America is composed of stupid blue-collar tradesmen swilling beer and watching people race motorcars around in a circle.
“Real” real America wears spectator shoes at least once a year, owns a seersucker suit, makes gin chota pegs in a pitcher, and has streets in Boston named after his ancestors.

What with Erich having the new gig, will he stop torturing the electrons with his whining posts? Maybe he’ll have a loyal deputy to take over? Deputy Dawg I’m thinking.
Sven Svenson was knocking ’em dead on NPR with his sober, balanced analysis… which means he didn’t call anyone a goat fucking child molester when the mikes were hot, so CNN must have thought he passed his out of town tryout.
How much would it cost to buy a news network, like CNN or MSNBC or a paper like the NYT or WaPo? All the money activists give to campaigns are basically counteracted by the shit they spew.
Labor unions, pro choice groups, immigrant groups, environment, bloggers, everybody. How much do they spend in an election cycle? Paying 500 million for a tv network seems like a good investment.
My dog just walked by and farted again.

Point of order, Mr. Spengler.
“Real Americans” came over on the Bering Strait when it was iced over. Everyone else is a recent immigrant in comparison. Also, there’s the Spanish colonization of Florida and most points west before any guys with buckles on their hats came over.
But otherwise, yeah, I dunno what some fucking Viking cast-off is doing representing real America.

The price of ethanol will now skyrocket, due to our sudden need for new sources of popcorn. (Thanks, CNN!) Putting Teabagger T. Teabaggerson on TV is a very cruel blow to the rotting corpse of American conservatism. Having that much pale lard melting under hot lights (in HD!!1!) shows the insanity of our right wing beyond all denial. Then, when he opens his mouth, ricocheting furiously between pwnage and self-pwnage, hilarity will truly ensue. (Too bad it’s only until he joins his fellow Borg at Rupert Murdoch’s Fake News.)

To Marion in Savannah, as a resident of Macon, I would like to clarify and disagree with your characterization of my city. Macon is not, (i)per se(/i) a small town. It is, however, typically(b)Southern (/b) with a large African American population, a description which can also be applied to Savannah. But because of its location on the coast and an important effort on the part of the State to promote the port there, Savannah is bigger. It is not, however, more progressive.
Our Rep, Jim Marshall, a Democrat, got reelected by a larger margin than did John Barrow, also a Democrat, in 2008. Both of them got reelected in 2006 by extraordinarily similar thin margins.
Erickson simply stayed here after law school at Mercer, which is a conservative Southern Baptist supported school, a relationship it has now mostly severed, financially, because of intrusion by the church on its academic mission a few years back.
Erickson also is a featured guest op-ed contributor to our newspaper where he is not much like his Red state persona. However, he has deliberately conducted a public feud with a long standing African American female and influential council member.
Physically, though, he is the poster boy for my mental picture of younger conservatives and Republicans.
Ooops, obviously I am not attuned to proper html formatting here. Sorry.
Use the pointy brackets.
I’m sure Macon’s not a total shithole–I mean, Gainesville, FL has a similar population and is not a total shithole. It’s just boring as fuck and the local politicians have IQs in the range of lukewarm tea, not that anyone around here is familiar with tea that isn’t iced, unless you count the Asian university students, instructors, and their families.
Oh yeah, and one of the City commissioners got drunk and hit and run some Black guy’s car and the police didn’t charge him and he didn’t step down BUT he did decide to “spend time with family” rather than run again. Erm, and the UPD officer who threw eggs at Black prostitutes in Porter’s and who wasn’t punished was now involved in shooting a disabled Ghanian instructor at the University with a semi-automatic weapon. (I linked to UF student newspaper on name.) Yeah, keep it classy, UF.
Hrm. I think it’s Stockholm Syndrome. It’s catching up to me!
