Of course, it’s still slightly better than his military record…

Oh shit, its the ‘Strong Horse’ OBL argument again. To start with its bollocks, and Crack-Pipes and Steyn’s buying into it, again, is just sad.

I don’t care how tasty those mangoes look, I’m not getting out of the boat.

Got out of the boat, & grabbed a mango before fleeing in haste & fear. Turns out it was just a big green doodie:

Smith takes as his prooftext Osama bin Laden’s comment in 2001, “When people see a strong horse and a weak horse, by nature, they will like the strong horse.” What Smith calls the strong-horse principle contains two banal elements: Seize power and then maintain it. This principle predominates because Arab public life has “no mechanism for peaceful transitions of authority or power sharing, and therefore [it] sees political con?ict as a ?ght to the death between strong horses.” Violence, Smith observes is “central to the politics, society, and culture of the Arabic-speaking Middle East.” It also, more subtly, implies keeping a wary eye on the next strong horse, triangulating, and hedging bets.

Does the bold part sound like any other culture or political party we might have some acquaintence w/?

One more Dungo:

On a larger scale, one accounting finds 15,000 terrorist attacks since 9/11.

Could someone refresh my memory as to the annual number of murders in the U.S.?

There were 17,034 murders in the United States in 2006 (666,160 murders from 1960 to 1996). In 2004, there were 5.5 homicides for every 100,000 persons, roughly three times as high as Canada (1.9) and five times as high as Germany (1.0). Most industrialized countries had homicide rates below the 2.5 mark. Overall the homicide rate in the United States was similar to that of some lesser developed Eastern European countries.

Whew. Can’t imagine what it would be like to live in the violence filled Arab world.

Oh, no, wait, he doesn’t. ‘Cause only Ay-rabs are terrorists ’cause of their evil religion and their weird inhuman language and yadda yadda blurp blurp blurp.

Does that include the Virginia snipers, the West Virginia (among other) massacres, the anthrax attacks, the killing of abortion doctors and bombing of abortion clinics?

Or are those too “white” (and yes, I know the snipers and the WV killer were not) for Pipes’ liking?

Ah, WELL, harrumph harrumph, those weren’t REALLY “terrorism” in Crack’s view, you see, not being carried out by Arabs with their Satanic brainwash suicide language and all that.

From the article:

the Muslim commander, Khalid ibn al-Walid, who in 636, Steven Stalinsky relates,

sent an emissary with a message from Caliph Abu Bakr to the Persian commander, Khosru. The message stated: “You should convert to Islam, and then you will be safe, for if you don’t, you should know that I have come to you with an army of men that love death, as you love life.”

This is totally different from “Kill them all. God will know his own” during the Albigensian crusade, seven centuries later, because shut up that’s why!

Oh, damn. Six centuries. Six. Mumble, mumble.

The number of terrorist attacks tallied worldwide before our invasion of Iraq was less than 300, now by crackpipes admission they number over 15,000.

So the only rational conclusion this twit can derive is that our profligate employment of violence against the Arab world in order to appear the “strong horse” is the correct strategy, based on some neocon asshole’s interpretation of a sound bite from a rambling bin ladin monologue.

Sheer fucking genius.

Mumble, mumble.

As much as I know conservative ranks are filled with mindless racists and that for the last decade, Middle Easterners have been the prime targets of that racism, it still boggles the mind to see how many of them there are.

How about the fact that the United States today is a society that’s become completely unable to look at the world in non-coercive terms? When discussing Iran’s enrichment program, the debate is all about whether we should bomb now, bomb later, let Israel bomb, or start another war altogether – do we sound like a sane and non-violent people? Our justice system is just crazy about punishment over rehabilitation, to the point that we’re the only Western democracy that still murders its criminals. The only part of our government we trust and take care of is its military (half the world’s military spending).

Guess what; Americans, particularly conservatives, are obsessed with death, brute force and being the stronger horse. (Look no further than Pipes’ own assertion that the murder of 1,000 Palestinian civilians in Gaza was “too weak.”)

Actor212,
“I’ve always wondered…Judaism is a very tolerant religion. It has to be, having been honed for centuries on the grinding wheel of intolerance and injustice.”

I don’t think it’s particularly peaceful compared with other religions (the Old Testament contains the murder of newborns, the invasion and theft of all Canaan and at least one genocide, just off the top of my head). But if you want to know “why,” Harry Truman had a pretty perceptive (though politically incorrect) assessment of Zionism;

“The Jews, I find are very, very selfish. They care not how many Estonians, Latvians, Finns, Poles, Yugoslavs or Greeks get murdered or mistreated as Displaced Persons as long as the Jews get special treatment. Yet when they have power, physical, financial or political neither Hitler nor Stalin has anything on them for cruelty or mistreatment to the under dog. Put an underdog on top and it makes no difference whether his name is Russian, Jewish, Negro, Management, Labor, Mormon, Baptist he goes haywire. I’ve found very, very few who remember their past condition when prosperity comes. Look at the Congress[ional] attitude on DP — and they all come from DPs.”

Human nature trumps Judaism.

I didn’t say peaceful, I said tolerant.

The Jews I know seem to be fairly flexible when it comes to judging people on their behavior. I don’t know Joe Lieberman, so I exclude him on that technicality.

They seem to accept that people are flawed and that it really is up to God to decide whether someone should be in the Book of Life or not. Now, I compare that to the Christians I know, who would judge you at the drop of a hat, despite the axiom of “hate the sin, love the sinner”.

And I don’t think Truman’s observation is limited to Jews. Anybody who finds success, either as a culture or an individual, tends to forget where (they) he came from. Indeed, the people who do not are rare enough that we all sit up and take notice of how he “didn’t forget”.

Re-reading Truman’s quote, it seems even Truman felt it was human nature not specifically Semitic.

So why is it the most hateful, spiteful and irrational people with regards to Middle East policy– people like Pipes and Pam Atlass– are Jews?

History loves irony, I think. My wife once asked a former Israeli colleague of hers about the Arab-Israeli conflict. The colleague’s response was to “explain,” rather offhandedly, that one had to realize that the Palestinians were basically uncivilized subhumans who would have to be resettled elsewhere before peace could occur. Failing that, the conflict would continue and the Palestinians would “gradually die out,” and while one could be sympathetic, one also had to understand that this was the reality.

I think I reached satori when she told me that story. It’s an odd mentality

Also, there are plenty of hateful, spiteful, and irrational people on the Arab side who really do want to see the Israelis exterminated; they just don’t make it on TV in the US. Much.

Sorry, but this is really worth the read;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Pipes

Besides the fact that he’s a birther who thinks Obama is or was a secret Muslim, this guy has been wrong about fucking everything in his supposed area of expertise for the last twenty years;

1) Supported arming Saddam in the Iran-Iraq war because, he argued, it could be “the basis for a fruitful relationship.”

2) Claimed that invading Iraq would “reduce” terrorism and President Mubarak was wrong to say otherwise (later admitted he blew that call).

3) Was one of the many jagoffs shaking their heads and commenting on the Oklahoma City bombing and how it bore clear and obvious Middle Eastern traits.

4) After writing a long and cynical article after the Gulf War explaining that American troops had no prospects of occupying Iraq and that there was a terrifying possibility of sectarian war (http://www.danielpipes.org/209/why-america-cant-save-the-kurds), suddenly reversed his policy ten years later when it became politically necessary for conservatives to support the war in Iraq.

This guy isn’t just a racist, he’s a fucking clown. He’s a political hack who knows as much about his supposed “area of expertise” as he does about the dark side of the moon, and has been wrong and wrong again on every issue he’s tried to predict. And this is what passes for think tank material in this country – God help us.

Trilat,

No doubt, and by no means did I want to leave the impression it’s only Israel’s fault and by extension the American Jew.

But, we support Israel already. We don’t need an ethnic cleansing policy.

Besides an obvious personal and historical tie to the region, one which was heavily emphasized and /or created by the late 19th / early 20th century Israeli nationalist movement, remember that you’re talking about an extremely tiny subset of the American Jewish population.

The most ridiculous charges of StalinHitler totalitarianism against Hugo Chavez of Venezuela or the overthrown President Manuel Zelaya of Honduras were, respectively, conservative Venezuelans and Hondurans.

This is what comprises just about every think tank I know of–and the media, including NPR, just loves to drink the vomit from their herpified pukeholes. They are, in my opinion, the footsoldiers in the corporate fight against labor, health care, education, and humanity in general. Their lies are directly responsible for quelling the backlash that should have come from the Bush administration’s suggestion that we invade Iraq.

From Esteev’s excellent link:

The now-infamous Northwest Airlines Flight 253, carrying Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab and his bomb-laden underwear toward Detroit on Christmas Day 2009, had 290 passengers and crew, all of whom survived. Had the inept Abdulmutallab actually succeeded, the death toll would not have equaled the 324 traffic fatalities in Nevada in 2008

Esteev, that article is great, and makes me think back to the climate change discussion we had a day or two ago and their seeming need for utterly incontrovertible, typo-free proof that would make it so obvious not even the willful could deny it but ONLY in the matter of climate change. Wars in the middle east, military action against Iran, limiting the Constitutional rights of citizens, torture, etc, these things require only the possibility that something maybe might could happen to justify, but OMG CLIMATE CHANGE IS FAKE CUZ IT’S SNOWING CASE CLOSED.

In Iraq, the administration ignored advice to install a democratically-minded strongman.

This is very rich in flavor. First, the obvious contradiction of a democratically minded strongman (no hyphen required, Pipes). Second, the idea that one could be installed by a foreign power, which would only remove him if he ever came to represent anything other than that power.
Finally, the link is to his own bullshit column. I at least expected a neocon thinktank report or a Wall Street Journal editorial. Does he really think everyone’s going to jump when he gets high? He can’t even be arsed to name a candidate, probably because his last one (Saddam Hussein) failed so poorly.

tigrismus, yes I would agree that the climate change/GWT have their similarities. Sadly, I think that climate change poses a more imminent threat to humans (not just Americans because I think that most people on the Right only care about Americans… that live on their block with their same ideals) than terrusts mainly because too many people (in gov’t) ignore it. You hit the nail on the head with:

the possibility that something maybe might could happen

Things that have a higher probability of happening include increasingly severe storms and car accidents seem to matter little. Mainly because you can’t build/sell tanks and stealth star fighters to battle tornadoes or drunk drivers. (Although that’d be hella cool).

Sadly, I think that climate change poses a more imminent threat to humans

That’s why your link about going crazy-cakes for practically non-existent threats while almost totally ignoring real ones made me think of how the climate change denialists and super-loopy neocon types are so often the same folks. Seriously, one woman I knew though there was NO evidence for climate change, but was totally convinced Saddam had moved all his weapons to Syria before we invaded.

Mainly because you can’t build/sell tanks and stealth star fighters to battle tornadoes or drunk drivers. (Although that’d be hella cool).

Maybe one of us should try to convince the Pentagon that you can – get some of that sweet black budget money, string ’em along on a fool’s errand, and keep ’em from making trouble because they’re too busy messing around trying to figure out how to bomb tornadoes.

And there’s always the possibility of tying it in to a lucrative action figure line for sale at Wal-Mart.

I just wanna say that Keith Ellison is my congressman and Al Franked is my senator. Unfortunately Tim “shitstain” Pawlenty is my governor.

OK, FYWP.

I made a really good comment about how we should get the Pentagon all worked up about how you might be able to bomb hurricanes so we could siphon off some blakc budget money (and the subsequent action-figure line we’d sell at Wal-Mart) and WP ate it. Bastidge.

WordPress is the greatest threat to our way of life that we currently face in the country.

You might sell a couple of tanks with the “this will protect you from any drunks on the road” line.

After being cut off or crowded out of a driveway by yet another asshole in an SUV, I’ve often fantasized about owning a tank. Or at least a vehicle with a nice, big cowcatcher up front.

Chris, the invasion and theft of all Canaan

The Jews made that up to make themselves look tough to their neighbors says Robert Wright in The Evolution of God.He claims there is no archaeological evidence to support the story.
Of course, Mr. Saddam Hussein made claims to be able to do similar things to his neighbors and Pipes had rather a different take on the matter. And he didn’t have to await archaeological evidence, he had UN inspectors to tell him Saddam was just pulling the world’s leg. And we see how that turned out so far, as per Pipes: We WIN!!!!!!!!!

When tanks are outlawed, only outlaws will have tanks.

Re: Arrogant Americans need not apply.

An EEOC attorney actually got involved with this??

Diana Johnston, an attorney for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, said a hiring decision based on national origin would be a violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination by employers on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin.

This wasn’t discrimination against Americans, just Americans or are, you know, a$$ holes. If more companies had this kind of policy, the workforce would be smarter, more culture-conscious and, probably, more productive because of the lack of morans.

Arrogant Americans need not apply

Ferne Wolf, a St. Louis-based employment law attorney, said the posting “sounds like national origin discrimination” and suggested the advertisement be brought to the attention of EEOC officials.

Wolf continued, “You’d think they would know better. Maybe they need a lawyer. There’s plenty of good defense attorneys in Chicago.”

Perhaps we should outlaw outlawry. Then only outlaws will be outlaws, and the tautology will work itself out in a couple decades.

What they should have done was claim the job was nominally based in Shanghai or Beijing, and then they could have left this up, because China probably has a policy that employers have to hire Chinese nationals first.

Then only outlaws will be outlaws, and the tautology will work itself out in a couple decades.

Why yes it does and I can also tell you exactly where they get it from. They got it from Nazi philosopher Carl Schmitt rather than Leo Strauss. Everything is there, the New World Order, the state of exception (Ausnahmezustand) justifying torture and a unitary presidency but especially in his concept of the political as

the enemy is whoever is “in a specially intense way, existentially something different and alien, so that in the extreme case conflicts with him are possible.”

John Searle has criticized this saying that democracy is not based on hating your political enemy so intensely that you want to kill him but on accepting certain institutional facts, namely that we don’t kill our political rivals, as constitutive of our very way of life.

They are literally Nazis. They literally want a fascist dictatorship in the US and the world.

I laughed (HA-ha!) and said: “Hey, what about Up and Down? Aren’t there any WMD’s in the air or under-ground?”

My conservative Dad & 3 brothers shouted “Shut Up!” so I left.

JarJar was a villian??

He did submit the proposal that the Chancellor seize martial powers as Emperor.

Don’t forget when Colin Powell at the UN presentation for the Iraq war waved around his little bottle of Nutrasweet or whatever to go “BOOGITY BOOGITY BOOGITY ANTHRAX BOOGITY BOOGITY”.

That and trying to run PR for My Lai.

. . . and then They didn’t find any WMD’s and I wondered (to myself) “Did they look in the Sky?” Snort! Glerk! -cough-

…and what protects me from the drunks who have tanks?

If you can’t beat them, join them?

Escalade Escalation

JarJar was a villian??

well, maybe not technically, but he has been pointed to as one of the most obvious indicators of how much Lucas ruined the movies….

This is central to my point.

But in actually, I find p-shooping wingnuts as villains gives them too much credit for competence. Also, many of them might actually find it complimentary.

Do they not read what they write, or do they not understand the words? That statement is so contradictory and stupid that one doesn’t know where to even begin criticizing it. Installed/democratic/strongman. One of these things is not the like the others…can you guess which term doesn’t fit?

Their definition of democracy is that which promulgates free markets and allows multinational corporations to act with impunity.

Of course, their language is Newspeak, not English.

Installed/democratic/strongman. One of these things is not the like the others…can you guess which term doesn’t fit?

You think “democratic” doesn’t fit in that triumvirate, but that’s because you are using Oldspeak.

In Newspeak, “democratic” has nothing to do with the rule of law, or basic fundamental freedoms, or even an electoral process. It just means pro-US.

So you see, there is no contradiction.

was there some job posting i missed advertising big bux u can work at home bug bux 4 being stoopits and making a loudmouthed idiot of yourself? cuz it does seem like an awfully popular career choice these days…

Curse you BBBB and your fast typing fingers!

He nuked the whole franchise- what did Darth and the boys do to match that?

But in actually, I find p-shooping wingnuts as villains gives them too much credit for competence. Also, many of them might actually find it complimentary.

C’mon, how many competent villains are there? “Tie him up to an overly-complicated deathtrap, and leave the room” is the usual villain M.O.

I think Malkin would make a great Queen of Blades.

YEEEEEEE DAWGGY!!!

We’uns hyeeah in Souf Kerlyna — we don’t need yer damn worfless fedrul currency, by God!

South Carolina will no longer recognize U.S. currency as legal tender, if State Rep. Mike Pitts has his way.

Pitts, a fourth-term Republican from Laurens, introduced legislation earlier this month that would ban what he calls “the unconstitutional substitution of Federal Reserve Notes for silver and gold coin” in South Carolina.

And while you’re damn at it, why don’t keep yer damn calendar and hours and standardized measurements to yourself, Federal Whore of Babble-On?!

Curse you BBBB and your fast typing fingers!

These fingers were produced by the Free Market, unlike your slow, socialized Canadian fingers.

WOLVERINES!!!

The fact that Canada has a higher wolverine population than the U.S. is central to my point nuncupatory. These are not the wolverines you are looking for.

It just means pro-US.

I would argue that it’s not even a pro-US position, it’s a pro-Exxon, KBR, GE, Wellpoint, Monsanto…et al. ad nauseam.

Oh, kee-ripes… Please keep your South Carolinian stoopid on your side of the border. We’ve got all we can handle, given our Senators and Governor. Thenkewverymuch.

South Carolina will no longer recognize U.S. currency as legal tender, if State Rep. Mike Pitts has his way.

This kinda of thing really makes me want to cry… because you must have a next to no operational brain cells if you a) elect someone with tthese ideas or b) are someone with these kinds of ideas. Even in my glue sniffed haze I think straighter than 99% of GOP politicians and 100% of the state of Souf Kerlyna.

Do South Carolinians have enough jobs to even see any federal currency? I thought they already mostly bartered rice, Myrtle Beach tourist kitsch, and dumb right wing politicians.

JarJar was a villian??

He nuked the whole franchise

Hullo???? Hayden Christensen????

South Carolina will no longer recognize U.S. currency as legal tender, if State Rep. Mike Pitts has his way.

Apparently, Mr Pitts is on the payroll of China, because I hear he’s got yuan in his pocket.

Hey, that’s not fair. There’s also those pine needle baskets.

Why would anyone need a basket for pine needles?

Just like the West before the law arrived.
Sweet! We’ll have to drink bourbon because there’s no clean water!

Living in a 3rd world country has some rewards. Not many, but I’m SO down with drinking my breakfast!

Perhaps we should outlaw outlawry. Then only outlaws will be outlaws, and the tautology will work itself out in a couple decades.

Ladies and gentlemen, today’s internet WINNER!

Well played, sir.

Why would anyone need a basket for pine needles?

Ever walked in a pine forest? Those needles get EVERYWHERE.

Why would anyone need a basket for pine needles?

Ever try to carry them in those cheap plastic bags you get in SC?

Why would anyone need a basket for pine needles?

Damn you, tig, and your fast hands and funnier punchline!

“Of course, their language is Newspeak, not English.”
“You think “democratic” doesn’t fit in that triumvirate, but that’s because you are using Oldspeak”

Well, that’s disheartening. This just proves what is central to Crack’s point. I’m an idiot terrorist coddling socialist America hater, which is central to the point of “those” people only responding to blunt force and maybe ice cream if they aren’t totally indoctrinated by BinLadenism. Thank you for setting me straight. Now I’m rethinking that whole bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran thing.

Heh–
“Slow down, you’re posting too fast”

TYWP for protecting me from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or crashing my brain due to excessive speed.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK.

South Carolina, laughingstock of the Lower 48.

I seem to recall someone went all ballistic on someone recently about S.C. and what they felt was giving the state a bad image. I mean, they’re doing it so fucking well in the State House – why compete?

Cripes, he’s not even on Wikipedia so I can’t find out how wingnutty he’s been up to this point, either.

(btw, WTF is he asking? S.C. should coin our own money? In gold & silver exclusively? Where’s he thinking we’re going to get enough metal to do that? Has he thought this out at all???)

Sitting here in Charleston, reading about the latest embarrassment from S.C. It’s pretty run-of-the-mill wackadoodlery. Go ahead and pour the scorn. We deserve it.

Then come and enjoy our amazing beaches. Forget Myrtle Beach. It’s crap. Come to Hilton Head, Folly Beach, Isle of Palms. The Low Country is gorgeous, and the food is fantastic. Spend lots of money. It’ll help those of us who are sane try to diminish the crazy-stoopid here somewhat — which believe me you don’t the half of, be glad (or terrified) to know.

Oh yes, and the worst craziness generally comes from upstate, not from the coast. They are really batshit up there.

I find it absolutely adorable, all these Southern politicians saying they’ll pick up their ball and go home. Does anyone think Souf Kerlyna could last a week without federal dough?

WTF is he asking? S.C. should coin our own money?

Confererate dollars.

“Their definition of democracy is that which promulgates free markets and allows multinational corporations to act with impunity.”

Heh, the worst thing is it’s completely true. That’s why elected leaders like Chavez and Morales (also the Sandinistas, Allende, Lumumba, Arbenz and Mossadegh) are routinely called “dictators” while Mubarak is considered a bulwark of democracy.

Big Bad Bald Bastard

Spend lots of money.

I don’t have a pocket full of gold.

The trick with Daniel “Crack” Pipes is that his father, Richard “I knew Harry Lime” Pipes thought he killed the USSR with rigged CIA reports and mind bullets, so Danny Boy thinks the only way to bring democracy or Hot Topic stores (some think the two are interchageable) to the Middle East is doing everything the CIA did to the Warsaw Pact but with extra forcefullness and crudity (because they’re not white people.) Expect bucketfuls of blood and trenches of corpses if anyone is fool enough to listen to Mr. Stratego.

Isle of Palms

And it’s wonderful town, Jacme.

And I don’t think Truman’s observation is limited to Jews. Anybody who finds success, either as a culture or an individual, tends to forget where (they) he came from. Indeed, the people who do not are rare enough that we all sit up and take notice of how he “didn’t forget”.

huRR HACK** Irish coff, coff
