A conservative politician in Georgia is telling his hometown police force to stop looking for the union label, or find new jobs.
“Big deal!” you say. “So some crank local official wants to deny his police force the right to organize and will risk leaving his town without any cops just to prove a point!”

Erick Erickson, the managing editor of RedState.com and a city councilor in Macon, Georgia, has called for the abolition of Macon’s police force if it votes to unionize.
The Macon Telegraph reported on Monday that some 130 police officers on the city’s municipal force want to unionize because of “officers bearing the burden of rising insurance costs, a loss of incentive pay and the city not having a pay scale.”
“I’m thinking I’ll have the City Attorney draft me legislation to dissolve the police department and contract with the Sheriff to provide public safety services,” Erickson wrote on the blog Peach Pundit.
“You didn’t read that incorrectly,” blogs Zaid Jilani. “Councilman Erickson’s response to the possibility of Macon’s cops forming a labor union is to abolish the police department.”
I’m old enough to remember when Republicans used to pride themselves as the law-and-order party who would be willing to spend some extra dough to hire more cops and get criminals off the streets.
Now they just want to abolish the police force.
We need a smarter center-right party in this country. Hell, scratch that. We already have a center-right party called the Democrats. What we need is a center-left party that can balance out the braying lunacy of the modern conservative “movement.”

During that time, there were a few high-profile muggings (some Georgia Tech students, a city council member). It’s only fair to point out (gag, choke) that Erick is not proposing privatization but purchasing police services from the county Sheriff on a contract basis–setting an annual rate for a certain number of patrol car hours, etc. and the Sheriff would in turn assign Roscoe and Enos to patrol Macon as their regular beat. The Sheriff would also hire more deputies, purchase more cars, or reallocate the existing resources. It’s been done by half of the cities in Los Angeles County since the 50s and 60s, though it appears to have no precedent in Bibb County, Georgia.
Now, this is probably a colossally stupid idea. The Bibb County Sheriff polices unincorporated areas, while Macon has about 60% of the county’s population. The sheriff’s usefulness as an urban law enforcement agency is probably limited.
For most of the history of the practice in Los Angeles contracting has had the effect of shifting county revenues from the general fund (paid for by all of the taxpayers in the county) to subsidize police services for the contracting cities. If the overhead costs for operating the Sheriff’s department are not adequately factored into the accounting formula, it can really rip off large cities that run their own departments and fund the police in smaller cities. If Erick wants to have his council term marked by annual pissing contests and lawsuits from other cities in the county or the Supervisors themselves over these accounting formulas, have at it. I’m sure that makes much more sense than dealing with a union that both officers and the chief favor.

In Los Angeles, the larger established cities have their own police departments: LAPD, Pasadena, Glendale, Burbank, Long Beach, etc. It was primarily newer, recently incorporated cities (West Hollywood, for example) or smaller townships which contract with the Sheriff’s Department, and many of those were policed by the Sheriff Department prior to forming indedpendent municipalities anyway.
There really isn’t any precedent in LACounty of which I am aware for handing over any large metropolitan area from a city PD to the sheriff.

As readers of Big Government know, late last Friday, ALG issued a press release claiming it had received an offensive e-mail from Dateline NBC producer, Jane Stone. Within hours, the Rightroots had been mobilized and the story when viral.
Known as the “Bite me Jew boy” e-mail, both Ms. Stone and NBC were pilloried by the Right. Throughout the weekend, Matthew Vadum chronicled the exchange of statements and press releases here on the BigGovernment.com website.
So Now What?
It’s been five days and ALG has yet to provide indisputable evidence to prove its claim and NBC continues to back Ms. Stone’s assertion she never sent the e-mail in question.
In making its claim, ALG gambled its credibility with activists and media contacts to help push a story that increasingly looks like a hoax. In at least 2 press releases, ALG very publicly accused a respected media professional for a major media outlet of an explicit act of anti-Semitism; a charge that if true would damage her reputation and destroy her career.
Collectively, the political Right advanced the story and stirred the pot after assurances from ALG that they had their facts straight and had done their due diligence. To date, it appears they had neither.

Newly discovered evidence shows the radical advocacy group ACORN has a man in the Obama White House.
This power behind the throne is longtime ACORN operative Patrick Gaspard. He holds the title of White House political affairs director, the same title Karl Rove held in President Bush’s White House.
Evidence shows that years before he joined the Obama administration, Gaspard was ACORN boss Bertha Lewis’s political director in New York.
Lewis, the current “chief organizer” or CEO of ACORN, was head of New York ACORN from at least 1994 through 2008, when she took over as national leader of ACORN. With Gaspard at work in the White House, Lewis might as well be speaking to President Obama through an earpiece as he goes about his daily business ruining the country.
Erick Erickson of the website RedState recently did an excellent job explaining the relationship of Gaspard to Lewis and President Obama so I won’t take up space here recalling all his valuable insights. Suffice it to say Erickson reported that Gaspard figures prominently in Lewis’s rolodex, which Erickson has in his possession.

Jeebus McRee! These Gomers are abso-fucking-lutely nuts! Up until this last election, I had no idea that ACORN was involved in voter registration or anything like that. In my area, all they’ve been working on is getting speed bumps installed in the side streets. I went to one or two of their meetings in the Lutheran church a couple of blocks away. This is a pretty diverse neighborhood, so there were a few Asian people there, and one family that looked like they might be Ethiopian or Somali, but it was a mostly white group, so there goes one stereotype right there.
They were very successful, too. All the streets between 1st Ave. S. and the Freeway got speed bumps. Except ours. It’s kind of an extra Avenue between 1st and 2nd, so we can never convince anybody it exists. Now all the kids drag race down our street. They’ve already run over one of our cats.
