Update 22: Sectarian Violence Continues in Iraq
By ALEXANDRA ZAVIS,
02.25.2006, 01:33 PMA car bomb exploded in a Shiite holy city and 13 members of a Shiite family were shot to death Saturday in a surge of attacks that killed about 50 people despite heightened security to curb Iraq’s sectarian violence following the bombing of a revered Shiite shrine.
*Surprisingly, the American Foreign Policy Council is a right-wing nonprofit entity.
“Senior Fellow” is a very commonly doled-out title among the thinktanklerati. I’m pretty sure its primary significance is that once it’s bestowed, the recipient may finally get to wedgie Ramesh, as opposed to the other way around.
Still, the roving bands of gun-toting, black clad youths attacking Sunnis and their places of worship on Wednesday were widely believed to have connections to the Mehdi Army, the armed wing of Sadr’s movement.
This is why you have to read more than the headline.
You know, if these attempts at an ecumenical stand against the sectarian violence are successful, which would suggest that civil war isn’t a likely scenario after all, will the warniks then agree there’s no reason for the occupation to continue?
It’s a rhetorical question.
