I remember that frequently, and often feel grateful that he was chosen. Both because if the worst should happen and he did win, he’d have been less scary than the others. But mostly because I figured he was the least palatable to the fringy base lunatics, so he’d be weak in the general election.

I’ve been taken completely by surprise at the magnitude of clusterbuggery his campaign has become, but I didn’t see the two biggest knocks (IMO) to it coming – the financial meltdown and the Palin pick. Wow. Just wow.

Mcain pissed away his lead. Immediately after he was nominated, the democratic primaries were still going on, and getting rather bloody. He had a built in advantage there, and the chance to get his act together earlier. If he had made a VP pick early, which satisfied the base AND wasn’t a complete flake, he could have got the republican base organised and working hard before Obama even had the nomination.

Obama was building the start of his ground campaign during the primaries, and the majority of the Hillary supporters joined in soon enough for the past turmoil not to matter at all. It helped that Obama actually had a good organisational structure which encouraged participation, and gave the Hillary supporters something to join in on.

Mcain on the other hand, didn’t have an organisation ready and waiting to embrace and organise the base. If he got his nomination by fighting for it, perhaps he would have had a coherent organisation. But since he won by default as the least awful candidate, he didn’t really have that.

Obama was a community organiser. And that is how he is winning the election. Organising communities. Mcain however, couldn’t organise a pissup in a brewery.

Sarah Palin is an intelligent, articulate, multi-talented, charismatic attractive women. She can speak to the hearts of everyman because she is the only candidate who truly IS everyman( or woman). I gather bernie’s premise is that a President Obama may not use America’s offensive military capabilities to deter small, asymetric terror attacks. And for that reason we are likely to suffer very high levels of terrorism, possibly (probably?) including the destruction of one or more cities with nuclear weapons.

While it is true that bush/cheney have used america’s offensive military power in response to 9/11, and it can rightly be said there has not been a large-scale terror attack on american soil since then. However if you believe this correlation is causation, then you probably believe that global warming IS caused by the reduction in pirates.

It is possible there will be another terror attack on the US, albeit much smaller in effect than 9/11, but it is VERY unlikely that an effective, functioning nuclear weapon will be built and delivered. And if anything has become obvious, it’s that terror is NOT a problem you can solve with large-scale military operations, but rather with law enforcement, intelligence gathering, diplomacy, a more honest and even-handed foreign policy and very small, focused, quiet and deadly specops strikes when the opportunity is available.

Once you accept that the bush doctrine was wasteful and counterproductive, you will realize that President Obama will do a much better job of national counter-terrorism than the belligerent idiocy we have seen the last eight years.

And as long as people were able to make small groups of violent anti-americans into the number one issue facing america, requiring unlimited expenditures to prevent a relatively few deaths, there was no hope for making the lives of americans better. And so they have not been made better. And while all eyes were focused on “a few thousand guys in caves”, the infrastructure broke, the economy melted down and it is OUR people who are living in poverty, without health care, education or hope.

The question finally had to be raised. Why is it that we have encouraged spending American’s money on all these foreign adventures, and so many cry out in genuine fear and anger when we propose spending American’s money on Americans?

At long last, it is indeed time for change…
