Down with W.E.B.!
Human Events Online is getting upset:
The Soviet Union awarded W.E.B. Du Bois the Lenin Peace Prize. Maoist China staged a national holiday in his honor in 1959. Now, for reasons unexplained, the Democratic Party’s 2004 presidential nominee seeks to honor Du Bois too.
Did John Kerry praise Du Bois’ work?
The writers of the Harlem Renaissance, whom we focus on today, celebrated their culture in poetry and prose while capturing the stark realities of being black in America. In committing their words to paper, they shaped a rich literary history and became agents of change.
W.E.B. Du Bois’ character in The Souls of Black Folk captured the frustration of many with the words: “How does it feel to be a problem? I answer seldom a word.”
Sadly, No! Laura Bush did that.
Did John Kerry feature Du Bois on his web site?
Sadly, No! President Bush did that.
Did John Kerry praise Du Bois’ intellect?
For generations, African Americans have strengthened our Nation by urging reforms, overcoming obstacles, and breaking down barriers. We see the greatness of America in those who have risen above injustice and enriched our society, a greatness reflected in the resolve of Jackie Robinson, the intellect of W.E.B. DuBois[.]
Sadly, No! President Bush did that. So when HEO writes:
From communism to eugenics to racial separatism, W.E.B. Du Bois was wrong on just about every major issue he championed. His admirers in Congress are wrong too.
Seems to us they forgot one branch of the government.
Similarly, “This Land is Your Land” was written by Woody Guthrie, an avowed communist. So anyone who dares teach it to children is obviously a Stalinist who loves Stalin and eats Stalin-o’s for breakfast.
Also, I love how Human Events has a pop-up calling itself “The Newspaper (sic) that Liberals Don’t Want You to Read!”
Of course, that just makes me want to read it more, since I wanna read what I don’t want others to read so I can make fun of it on my blog and, ironically, get more people to read it.
As much as I respect the communist movement in most of its incarnations, I am struck by the idea of a “Lenin Peace Prize.” Isn’t that a bit like a “Courtney Love Clean Living” prize or a “Willie Nelson Taxpayer Award?”
“As much as I respect the communist movement in most of its incarnations…”
*What* incarnations? The only Communists I know are the people who hang out in Harvard Square and don’t bathe.
I’m mostly talking about the types of people that fought for Unions during the depression, all of the great commie artists (Frida Kahlo, etc).
Aaaaaaaah, OK!
Thing about most of those people, though, is that they *said* they were Communists, but in practice they were more democratic socialists. I mean, Communism is by nature totalitarian. I can’t see Woody Guthries being all that into it once it’s, you know, actually implemented…
You’ve convinced me! Obviously Dubya and Laura should be declared enemy combatants and locked up incommunicado for the rest of their lives.
Is Irony Dead? According to the tagline after the article in question, the author…
Which I suppose is an autobiography, of sorts, as the “smart” author is only one in his own mind;-)
The United States Postal Service is also apparently full of commies, what with them having given the guy a stamp
I mean, Communism is by nature totalitarian. I can’t see Woody Guthries being all that into it once it’s, you know, actually implemented…
Oh, for God’s sakes…when will Americans stop talking about Communism? It’s so 20 years ago.
“this land is your land” anls had a verse scrubbed for pop consumption.
Is this where I bring up Brian Eno again?
As I went walking, I saw a sign there;
And on the sign there, It said, ‘NO TRESPASSING.’
But on the other side, It didn’t say nothing.
That side was made for you and me!
Maoist Chinese generally agree that beating children with a bag full of oranges should be a punishable offense.
For the sake of democracy, we must get laws protecting those who would beat their children with bags full of oranges on the books!
Fuck all this political crap! Where do I get me some of those delicious Stalin-o’s? I’m a hungry hungry comsymp!
I used to eat Trotsky-o’s, but at some point the co-op stopped selling them. I heard all the boxes got mysteriously smashed up.
I find that it’s best to read all HEO articles translated by Gizoogle:
Now that you’ve posted this, if you do your best conservative thinking (which comes quite naturally to me, thycwoti), you will see the logical next step is to say that John Kerry hates black people because he didn’t even mention DuBois as one of the great thinkers!
JD: Have you ever tried the Google/Elmer Fudd version of Bush’s second inaugural address?
Thorlac-
I dunno where you can get Stalin-O’s anymore, but I’m pretty sure North Korea still sells Leader Flakes (when they’re not hit with massive shortages at the supermarket, at least).
Or, if TEAM AMERICA can be trusted, “Reader Frakes.”
JD: Have you ever tried the Google/Elmer Fudd version of Bush’s second inaugural address?
I haven’t but I’m thinking there’s a lot of stuff about Fweedom . . .
So all of a sudden the conservatives have discovered a fondness for Martin Luther King. That’s interesting. Considering the path he was on in 1968 — supporting striking garbagemen, lending his voice to the antiwar movement — I somehow don’t think they’d be using him as an example of a Good Black if he hadn’t been assassinated.
Nice logical excavation, Seb. Yes, WEB was wrong about this White House too.
I want to know when this White House and their minions are going to discover Malcolm X. That would be interesting.
Similarly, “This Land is Your Land” was written by Woody Guthrie, an avowed communist.
“This land is your land this land is my land” implies that the land belongs to the people, a complete violation of property rights!
“JD: Have you ever tried the Google/Elmer Fudd version of Bush’s second inaugural address?”
Sadly, No. I can’t even find it.
Opposition to Honoring Du Bois Mounts
The story I broke last week regarding John Kerry’s authorship of a resolution honoring W.E.B. Du Bois has received a good deal of attention. In his Sunday column, Robert Novak included information from my piece in bringing the issue to…
